Reader Thom Martin has released his version of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite, arranged in the ‘switched on’ style with analog monophonic synthesizers.

A Switched-On Nutcracker is available via Bandcamp.

Technical Details:

All sounds were created on either a Sequential Circuits Pro-One or a Moog Rogue and performed live into Logic, with the exception of the ‘timpani’ ostinato in the Arabian Dance and the ‘harp bits in the Waltz of the Flowers, which were performed using the Pro-One’s on-board sequencer.

    1. Yeah, I won’t claim to be on par with Wendy Carlos but I had fun making it even it it was a metric butt-ton of work. Thanks for listening, and I’m glad you enjoyed it.

  1. Loved every nutty minute of it!

I never imagined the nutcracker as a nightmarish Czar though… he risked his life in battle with the evil rat-king to save gingerbread people from certain doom (and Christmas)!

    1. Thank you very much!

Regarding the artwork: I’ve always found nutcrackers to be rather creepy, so when I asked edbot5000 to do this art, I requested his take on a creepy robo-nutcracker. I’m pretty thrilled with the result, actually. 🙂

  2. This is great, BUT, where is the Dance of the Snowflakes (or whatever it’s called)? You need to do a Japanese release or a collector’s edition or something with that on there. It’s the best thing in the whole ballet.

Seriously though nice work. Interesting and listenable.
