Live MIDI Synth Jam

Sunday Synth Jam: This video, via P.ortra.it, captures a live MIDI synth jam at the Moog Sound Lab.

Here’s what they have to say about it:

This was our attempt to play, perform, and multitrack eleven midi instruments simultaneously. Every part of this song was triggered and recorded in real-time (with the exception being the kick & snare which were the back-track).

Technical details below.

Full Gear List:

  • 1 X Moog Sub 37
  • 3 X Minimoog Voyager Rackmount Edition
  • 1 X DJ TechTools Midi Fighter Spectra
  • 2 X Minimoog Voyager
  • 1 X Minimoog Voyager XL
  • 1 X Moog Sub Phatty
  • 1 X KORG Volca Keys
  • 1 X KORG Volca Beats
  • 1 X MakeNoise Shared System

  1. Meh. Also I might be wrong but it sounds like quite a bit of post prod.. Good effort anyway, I wish I had just one Moog Voyager!

      1. Thanks for your clarification. Could you also explain a bit more in depth the signal path? I think I am not the only one who’s curious about it!
        Cheers

        1. Certainly.

The IO was 2 x TC Electronic Studio Konnekt 48s. You can daisy chain them together and they show up as one IO in Ableton.

Every piece of gear was going directly into the interface. So we had roughly 14 direct audio inputs from the synths and the makenoise rig.

The 2 X Minifooger MF delays were patched in to the interface as effects sends. Panned hard left and right so that we could use it to simulate an evolving stereo delay. We had plans to also hook up 2 x LPF this way to use as saturators but ran out of time.

We ran through the entire song 4 times live and recorded all 17 audio tracks simultaneously as well as a rough master mix. We also ran through each part of the song 4-6 times (as a loop)

In post… the 17 tracks were treated as a multitrack recording. Things were grouped. EQ’d. Compressed, and Side-chained. There was digital reverb send. It was mixed just like I would mix any other song.

I’d be happy to answer any other questions.

  2. A step in the right direction! Electronic music needs more live interaction among musicians. Any synth jazz ensembles out there?

  3. This is great but I have no idea what’s going on, seems like none of the sounds really correlate to the footage… I hear some vocal snippets, as they pan over some moog synths etc.

  4. Anyone know of the program used to stream their Ableton session in video chat?

I find that useful for collaborating with others.
