Morton Subotnick Explains His Buchla Modular Synthesizer Setup

In this video, electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick  explains his Buchla modular synthesizer setup.

Subotnick collaborated with Don Buchla on the design of the original Buchla synthesizer.

Subotnick has also been an advocate for taking a more experimental or non-traditional approach to synthesis for 50+ years. This ‘West Coast’ approach emphasizes using new music controllers, designed specifically for the requirements of synthesis, rather than traditional piano-style keyboards. In addition, timbre is often controlled by direct modulation of the oscillator, rather than by using a filter to subtract harmonics.

Subotnick’s demo was filmed at the 2014 Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp San Francisco.
