Jodorowsky’s Dune Score Features Retro Futuristic Sounds Of Kurt Stenzel & SpacEKrafT

The highly anticipated documentary Jodorowsky’s DUNE, described as “the story of the greatest science fiction movie never made”, features an analog synthesizer laden soundtrack by composer Kurt Stenzel.

In addition, the soundtrack features 5 tracks by SpacEKraft, a duo made up of Stenzen & Edward Dahl, who co-pilot space travel themed multimedia events.

Jodorowsky’s DUNE tells the story of filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic Dune. Jodorowsky enlisted an elite group of artists, including French comic book artist Moebius; screenwriter Dan O’Bannon (DARK STAR, ALIEN); artist H.R. Giger (ALIEN); and sci-fi paperback illustrator Chris Foss. For the cast, he lined up icons ranging from Salvador Dali and Mick Jagger to Orson Welles.

Jodorowsky’s version of Dune was never made, but the documentary looks at the way it ‘planted seeds’ for many iconic science films that came after it, including Star Wars & Alien.

Here’s the official preview for the film:

Stenzel created the soundtrack for the documentary with a myriad of analog synths and effects.

At this point, it doesn’t appear that a soundtrack album is available. You can listen to the 5 SpacEKrafT below:

See our 2010 SpacEKrafT post for a video intro to the electronic music multi-media project. More info is available at the SpacEKrafT Facebook page and at the film’s site.

“Director Frank Pavich has created a wonderful documentary that tells this story in an interesting, funny, sad, yet inspiring way,” notes SpacEKrafT’s Edward Dahl. “Support art, film and music and go see this movie while it is still in theaters!”

      1. Yeah. You are right. Far too much money needed.
It’s a pity because I would have loved to have seen the final movie.

        1. Yeah, I would have loved to see it too.

However, have you ever seen a Jodorowsky film? Fairly mental stuff. It’s not like it would have been a Ridley Scott type movie, it would have been very weird.

Speaking of which, Ridley Scott was next up to direct Dune but pulled out (after 2 million had already been spent) because he brother died. He decided to do a much smaller film instead – Bladerunner.

      2. But you could plausibly launch a kickstarter to create an animated version of the film which even Jodorowsky said he wouldn’t mind seeing the movie made into. At this point, animated is the only way I could see the movie getting done one day.

  1. Can’t wait to see this I read an article on his version of dune some years ago apperbtlyhe had möbius design a dolphin toilet for Dali to piss in on camera!! Pink floyd were approached to do the soundtrack

  2. Genius filmmaker way ahead of his time and who doesn’t get the credit he deserves. If he had the budget and all the characters such as Dali and Orson Wells he wished in the film it would have been a cult classic!
It would have made the shallow plot of Star Wars look amateur by comparison.
The sound track from the time could have been possibly awesome given the time it would have been produced in too. It would have made the shallow plot of Star Wars look amateur by comparison.

  3. I Saw this Doc the other week. It was Incredibly inspiring and the soundtrack could not have been better.
If you can see it in a theater with a top notch sound system, then you ear drums will be tickled with joy!

  4. This movie, and the soundtrack, left me so inspired! Kudos to the production team, and Jodorowsky himself, for turning what could have been a woe-is-me story into one really excellent and uplifting movie!

  5. Read an interesting headline that a bad Dune – and Jodorowsky’s take on the material would have been a fiasco – may well have killed Star Wars because financing anything set in space would have been impossible after Jodorowsky’s big budget failure. The doomed production makes an interesting story and the artwork is stunning, but Jodorowsky’s Dune would have killed much better films not because he would have been the first to mine the rich vein of space opera but because film studio execs would never have opened their wallets for Star Wars, Alien, Raiders of the Lost Ark, et al.

  6. Just saw this film in SF…. stunning!!!! Jodo is like a galactic-class set of cardio-paddles to reanimate your creative heart from the state of torpor and inertia the Commodity System has induced in the go-along-to-get-along gulag we call Life. And Kurt Stenzel’s score is beyond perfect… like the soundtrack to a future that never was, yet somehow is all around us anyway. You listen to Jodorowsky dream out loud for a couple of hours and you’re ready to overthrow the Colonizers of Consciousness that have enslaved us all for their aggrandizement and eternal exploitive whim.

This film is like a Warsaw Uprising against the rubber-stampers of flatline, profiteering “art” and helps put the capital A back in it, where in belongs. See it immediately or you’ll wake up one morning and you’ll be Jonathan Pryce in “Brazil,” only it WON’T be a movie and there will be NO escape 😛

  8. Im honestly glad this didnt happen. Sure, Jodorowsky makes some deep films, but his representation of dune would have gone even farther off track then David lynchs. It had almost nothing to do with dune at all. He would have made the sandworms microscopic things which inhabited the flesh of guild navigators secreting spice. He would have made the planet arrakis “arzok?(what is that even?)” .
The harkonens arent even on Giedi prime. The Padashah emperor would have been “The blood emperor” the Harkonens live in a sentient castle, which no one leaves, and which expells shit and bones for some reason. None of it makes sense. None of it has anything to do with dune other then using similar names, and the fact that he labeled it “Dune”. Its rediculous. Im Severely frustrated by the fact that it seems every time somebody decides to make a “dune movie” They go off on these wild non dune related tangents, warping the story into some grotesque almost wholey unrelated thing. David lynchs dune was bad, this would have been astronomicaly worse.
