  1. What is so important about having AU format compared to VST? I ask this because I am ignorant and I really want to know.

    1. I tend to prefer AU over VST since it is native to the platform I’m using. I’m not opposed to using a VST; in fact, some times the VST works better (e.g. Voxengo Span supports more than 2 inputs with the VST version whereas the AU doesn’t); but I prefer AUs first.

I also like that the AU SDK doesn’t require a non-disclosure agreement to use. The docs are open for all to read — https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/MusicAudio/Conceptual/AudioUnitProgrammingGuide/Introduction/Introduction.html

To get the VST SDK has an encumbrance before you can even read it — http://www.steinberg.net/en/company/developer.html

    2. Hey Matty,

In the future I plan to do other formats. I just did AU first because Apple had some decent docs and example code. But, as I found out later, most developers use a system that allows them to write code once and then deploy on both AU and VST. So I’ll have a VST version eventually đŸ™‚

      cheers

      1. good to hear, i’d like to be able to load vst’s as modules like u can with au’s. i rarely ever install the au version of plugins. not a logic user.
