Samplemodeling Flutes – Realistic, Expressive, Realtime Playable Virtual Flutes

Samplemodeling Flutes is a new virtual instrument, based on Synchronous Wavelength Acoustic Modeling (SWAM), designed to create realistic and playable C-Flute, Piccolo, Alto & Bass Flute.

Flutes uses samples as a base material, chromatically performed by a professional player over a very wide dynamic range, and recorded with state-of-the-art technology. The resulting timbre is therefore that of the real instrument. But the analogy with a sample based library ends here.

The underlying technology allows continuous interpolation among different vectors like time, dynamics, pitch and formants. Advanced real-time processing techniques yield realistic legato, vibrato, squeak, overblow, ornamentations & trills, pitchbends, subharmonics, growl and flutter tongue to be performed in real time.

Flutes was created by Stefano Lucato, Emanuele Parravicini and Samplemodeling (Giorgio Tommasini & Peter Siedlaczek).

Samplemodeling Flutes is available as a plugin for Mac & Windows for 229 Euros. See the Samplemodeling site for details.

  1. That was really impressive. All the SampleModeling demos I’ve heard have been really good. Though there are a few moments when it sounds “super-human”; to my ear, even those moments seem very musical and seem to just be elements of the new sound. The fact that it can make the phrasing and dynamics sound so expressive and responsive takes it to a level you can seem to get with samples.

Of course, a real flute is lovely thing, but this is an easy 2nd, from all the things I’ve heard.

I couldn’t sit through the vanilla bossa, but the point was certainly made. And that guy does have chops, doesn’t he?

  2. Not sure how, but I’m pretty sure I’m pregnant after listening to all smooth jazz flute demo… and I’m a man :\

I guess what I’m trying to say is, nice work.
