Akai Pro has released specifications for the upcoming iMPC Pro – a 64-track music production center for iPad, offering built-in sampling functionality, a sound library, effects, and performance-driven features.

In addition, they’ve released a new demo video, in collaboration with developer Retronyms, that demonstrates using hardware pad controllers with the app.

Akai iMPC Pro Features

iMPC Pro offers 64 tracks, each with 4 pad banks of 16 pads. Each of the 64 tracks has a dedicated, automatable mixer channel that features a gain fader, 3-band EQ, pan, and four effect sends. Plus, a Master Channel includes a master fader and in-line master compressor threshold and gain.

iMPC Pro can record samples three different ways:

  • sing the microphone on the iPad
  • using the line input on the iPad, or
  • using the multi-touch turntable interface in iMPC Pro to record samples directly from iTunes or other music libraries.

In addition, a resampling feature records audio that comes out of the Master output and places it in your current project as a new sample.

iMPC Pro also comes with a sample editor that supports multi-touch editing with zoom, envelopes, gain controls, and more. Slice mode automatically splits your sounds along a time-divided grid, making it easy to chop up samples into one-shots or loops. You can then trim and audition the sample prior to committing any of your trim edits.

Additionally, you can process your sound with reverse, normalize, amplify, fade-in, and fade-out effects directly from the sample editor.

Timeline View

The all-new Timeline View opens a multi-touch gestural editor that enables you to sequence, program, record, and edit note events and their parameters all on one screen. The Timeline consists of a grid that can be set to various beat divisions, making it easy to program beats or songs by locking note events to the Timeline.

In addition, you can record directly to the Timeline, and use Time Correct to automatically quantize your playing from a range of 1/8-note to 1/32T settings with variable swing. Each note event has a horizontal line that displays the level of a specific parameter, such as the velocity level, for quickly checking or editing without diving into more menus. You can also select, copy, paste, and cut any number of note events using iOS gestures.

Built-in Sounds

iMPC Pro comes with 1,200+ sounds from sound designer Richard Devine. This collection of samples includes drum beats, synths, basses, leads and more.

You can edit any of the sounds, re-sample them, and add them to your own bank of custom sounds.

iMPC Pro also supports .WAV and .AIFF files, so you can import, edit, and produce with your own sample libraries.

Performance Features

In addition to its production capabilities, iMPC Pro offers a series of performance-driven features.

Flux, an expressive performance control, is an easy way to warp and glitch your beats into something entirely different. With real-time controls, you can drop beats, create glitch effects, and smooth out track transitions during any live performance. Flux also supports automation, so you add the same dynamic intensity to your productions.

The 3D-performance mode, a new addition to iMPC Pro, allows you to map iMPC Pro parameters to your iPad’s accelerometer and manipulate your music by tilting your iPad.

Next Sequence lets you queue and juggle your sequences, allowing you to remix and perform on the fly. And classic MPC functionality, such as MPC Note Repeat and Note Variation, let you control samples expressively.

Effects

iMPC Pro comes with an array of onboard effects that include reverbs, delays, bit crushers, limiters and more. The Turbo Duck compression effect fattens up your tracks by mixing in sidechain compression. It can also create a pumping-and-breathing effect. In addition, the Turbo Duck icon animates to the compressor’s dynamics—dipping up and down when the compressed sound “ducks” out—to provide real-time visual feedback of the effect’s intensity.

New User Interface

iMPC Pro’s UI was redesigned for a cleaner look and improved gestural control.

iMPC Pro’s interface is broken down into five tabs – Main, Program, Mixer, Timeline, and Song – that organize the core elements of your music.

iMPC Pro is also outfitted with Precision Knobs, controls that can be tapped and magnified so you can precisely dial in parameter values. Undo History allows you to roll back edits from a list of changes, enabling you to experiment with changes and return to previous states.

Inter-App Audio Integration

iMPC Pro lets you can sample directly from your other music apps.

Inter-app audio allows you to route audio and control data between apps on your device. Use iMPC’s sampler and inter-app audio to record new sounds from compatible apps for use in your programs.

iMPC Pro is also compatible with Retronym’s Tabletop app, a modular audio environment with dozens of synthesizers, sequencers, effects, and more.

AudioCopy

AudioCopy 2.0 makes it easy to paste sounds from compatible apps. Updated for compatibility with iOS 7, AudioCopy 2.0 also includes an updated UI and other improvements. Visit retronyms.com/audiocopy for more information.

Share Your Sounds

With integrated community support, you can produce a track and then upload it directly to SoundCloud, Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr from your iPad.

Hardware Control

The latest video looks at using hardware controllers, like the MPC Element and the MPC Fly, with iMPC Pro:

  • The MPC Element is a portable USB MPC pad controller, with pressure and velocity sensitivity. It has a street price of about US $150.
  • The MPC Fly is an iPad case that features 16 velocity-sensitive MPC pads.

  1. so basically, everything we wanted the iMPC app to be but wasnt, now in new not-convenient, have-to-purchase-again form!

i’ll still probably buy it though.

  2. That does read like a pretty full feature list, but I couldn’t help but cringe a little bit at:

Note: iMPC Pro is currently in development, so features are subject to change

I know, I’m a cynic, but one that’s happy to be proved wrong 😀

    1. Can’t see that discount happening. They’ve never been bothered about listening to and/or helping keep their customers and why should they be?
It’s probably worth the price alone for the Devine samples, which I’ll rip out and use in something better that won’t constantly annoy and distract me with notifications of the ‘User X has uploaded something to Soundcloud’ variety, that can’t be turned off.
the lack of Audiobus isn’t exactly a surprise either, although since I got (and configured) my iCM4+ I’m far less bothered about stand-alone apps, although this is still way to crippled to be ‘the one’ iOS groovebox app we’re all still waiting for – we’re looking at you now, UVI!
      Retronyms – the new Amidio.

      1. Well, I’ll say that Apple doesn’t currently give us a way to do upgrade pricing. It’s possible they will add something like this in the future. Every software company on the PC did upgrade pricing. It’s just smart business and good for customers. I’m sure we would do it if we could.

  3. The software is still under development and there are some things that are mentioned in the spec. For instance we are going to support IAA as a node, through the sampler and as a master effects.

We will work to up date the spec asap. Check out iMPC Pro Log for details

    Thanks!

      1. No audiobus support planned it seems. It will have interapps audio according to the developers and that is enough. Mind you, it’s supposed to be a standalone app isn’t it?

        1. Recently I read AudioBus announced that the new SDK required for iOS 8 will enable IAA for all AudioBus compatible apps. This would mean that you could use iMPC Pro with virtually any audio app that supports AudioBus or IAA.

    1. Not sure what you mean here. Is the app capable acting as a node or not? If it is, you should be able to launch it from within say Cubasis or Auria, and record iMPC Pro’s output to the track(s) it’s active on inside those DAWs. A node is a node, 🙂

    2. Hey Dan,

MPC file export is listed in the specs. yet is still not available. Retronyms response is has ranged from “..we are busy with other projects” to an ambiguous “..who says we won’t be adding it at some point in the future”. Will someone have the courage and decency to step up and explain why that feature was omitted and why you are not actively working on it and when will it be available?

  4. $19.99 for the first 2 weeks then up to $39.99 after that, with sporadic sales as demand comes and goes, and in-app purchases of effects and loop packs

    1. Beat Maker 2

      – Instrument and effect recording options: Quantize, take or partial undo, pre-roll, Overdub, note erasing.

      * WAVE EDITOR
      – Full-fledged wave editor with intuitive interface for manipulating samples
      – Basic edition tools: trim, cut, copy, paste, with undo/redo
      – High quality time-stretching and pitch-shifting algorithms
      – Audio tools: normalize, silence, reverse, fade in and out, cross-fade
      – Record new samples from microphone or instruments
      – Loop points and tempo/signature editor

  5. I hope it will be available as an IAP for existing iMPC users.
I am a proud owner of Arctic Keys and than Arctic Keys Pro was released without an option to upgrade..?!
I have purchased the so called PRO version and now I have 2 Arctic Key Apps residing on my iPad side by side… I just hope it will be different this time round… 🙂

  6. What about midi sequencing, midi receive ? Will be possible to use it as sound module with external sequencer (like RS7000, Monomachine/MD/Octa and so on) ? Will it receive program change ?

  7. That ipad case with pressure sensitive buttons is pretty neat, actually!

    Definitely, this looks pretty good.

And another great bonus from my point of view is that this gives some positive pressure for Native Instruments to enhance their iPad app offering. 🙂 (proper Maschine companion app, pretty please!)

  8. I really doubt it will be able to upgrade with an IAP. this is teh Pro version. Completely different name=different app.

  9. Hopefully they will add multi Channel Inter app audio and the ability to export MPC project files that can opened on current and legacy hardware.

  10. ADMIN NOTE: A ‘comment vote spammer’ put hundreds of malicious comment votes on this thread. Clearly malicious downvotes have been deleted.

We also deleted comment discussion about the vote spam, because it was not relevant to the post.

  11. That’s an impressively well-thought-out instrument, but the screen is too small for me, heh heh. 😛 I just plain “need” more slinging room, but wow, talk about pushing the envelope. I think some people dilute their efforts by jumping between apps past a certain point, but I have to respect the muscle of this one. Its close to being a full house of means. I’d like to see someone run a couple of synths like Sunrizer at the same time and tell us how the iPad handles the load. That’s my only meaningful concern. Akai is beginning to emulate Korg a bit, with some savvy software and mini-devices. Smart.
