TEControl USB MIDI Breath Controller Review

In this video, composer and music producer Mike Verta shares his thoughts on the TEControl USB MIDI Breath Controller

The MIDI Breath Controller transforms the breath pressure signal to MIDI CC messages that let you add realistic expression to performances. This is useful for live performance with synthesizers and DAWs, giving you control of volume, expression and other parameters of soft synths and sample libraries.

  1. It’s a little counter-intuitive (or perhaps backwards) to use the breath control for vibrato and the wheel for expression/dynamics. To me it seems to defeat the purpose– but it really doesn’t matter. The point is that you condition yourself to work with several controls and connect with the sound.

I have a TEControl and use it with a Reaktor ensemble called Silverwood. It is really satisfying.

  2. Adding breath control seems to instantly make brass and wind virtual instruments sound way more realistic. There was a bow controller on here recently, and it does the same thing for string instruments.
