Free Music From Aphex Twin

Why is Richard D. James (aka Aphex Twin) smiling?

It could be because he’s got a new Aphex Twin album out.

It could be that he’s got a boatload of awesome gear.

Or it could be that he’s got 20+ modular trax for you to download and listen to. Check it out below!

If you have not seen it already, don’t miss his in-depth interview with Dave Noyze:

  1. I never hear good music come out of modular (that I know of). I saw this and thought, finally, this will be great. And it’s more noise, like every other modular clip I hear.

    1. Well… you can only really make this noise on a modular I guess, which is why you see so much of this coming from modular systems. There’s probably a bunch of music out there that uses modulars that just sound like regular synths, and we’re none the wiser.

    2. This is nonsensical. A modular is an instrument just like any other instrument. What comes out of it is entirely dependent upon how the musician decides to use it. It has nothing to do with the instrument itself!

  2. i enjoy Aphex Twin but man.. that first comment made me laugh… get a sense of humor people… I bet Richard would laugh and take it as a compliment

i also see a lot of comments about how people only make noise on modulars… there is a lot of hype for analog and modulars today… but blame the person.. not the instrument or assortment of modules

then again.. im not very interested in random sequencing.. unless its used as a modulator for something other than pitch… i believe modulars lend themselves to highly expressive and amazing sounds… but i guess people with really impressive setups just want to show others what they own… and while learning how to use it… patch it the fuck up and let er run while recording to show it off… but the sounds don’t really inspire… those that dig in will find gold… but then again.. you can find gold with a 50 dollar casio in the right hands

  3. TOTAL Synthtopia FAIL!

The analogue music here is NOT the best bit about this release; its the interview AND all the other audio that’s been released alongside it.

When the music is taken in context and played while reading the interview – it makes a LOT more sense!!

    Highly recommended reading!!

    1. I took a shot at reading the entire article, but feel like the use of text-speak throughout the interview/article took away quite a bit. However, I do now have a greater understanding of how massive his Ego is and why he considers everything he produces to be instantly priceless. In addition, I also now understand that “music” has as loose a definition as “art”, and if good Mr. James calls his bleeps and bloops “music”, who am I to argue. *shrug

Also, I listened to the entire album, and I don’t think he has done anything revolutionary with “Syro”, but at least it is [almost] listenable. The entire album sounds a bit like (loops stolen from) B-sides of mid 2000’s era techno, DnB, and lounge music.

      Less drugs please, RDJ.
