Robert Fripp – ‘Silent Night’

Robert Fripp‘s take on Silent Night, from 1979, is a Frippertronics-style looping exploration of Franz Gruber’s carol.

Fripp’s Silent Night was originally released as a flexi-disc with the Chicago based Praxis Magazine, Vol. 1, No. 3 December, 1979. It was also an aural Christmas card from EG Records. This recording is from the King Crimson “Sex Sleep Eat Drink Dream” 5 track EPCD (1995).

Frippertronics refers to Fripp’s approach to looping, which uses a long tape loop, stretched between two tape recorders, to allow for live looping and overdubbing. Fripp introduced his Frippertronic playing on the 1973 collaboration, with Brian Eno, No Pussyfooting.
