Tangerine Dream – Montreal 1977

Sunday Synth Jam: In memory of Edgar Froese, who died last week (Jan 20th) at the age of 70, here is a classic live performance by Tangerine Dream.

The recording comes from a concert at Place des Arts (Montreal), on April 09, 1977. It features the seminal Edgar Froese, Chris Franke & Peter Baumann lineup.

The Montreal concert recording comes from the Tangerine Tree project – a series of fan-led and group-approved recordings of TD that were not recorded for official released.

About the Montreal 1977 Concert:

During Tangerine Dream’s North American Encore tour of 1977, two of their concerts were broadcast over radio.

The first was the concert at the Washington Lisner Auditorium on April 4th (see Tangerine Tree Volume 4: Washington 1977), and Montreal Palace des Arts followed soon after on April 9th. The still existing CHOM-FM radio station aired the complete show, and despite some minor technical flaws (and comments from the CHOM-FM presenter during some of the tracks), Tangerine Tree Volume 18: Montreal 1977 is able to present another performance from the Froese/Franke/Baumann line-up.

The quality of the music alone would justify an official release as it has all the trademarks which made Encore such a fan favorite For the North American tour, Tangerine Dream always began their concerts with variations on Cherokee Lane and Monolight, which were then followed by music which was, for the most part, completely improvised.

The band also appeared onstage with Laserium, an outfit that produced laser light spectacles.

Tracks:

  • 0:00:00 – Cherokee Lane [19.12]
  • 0:19:12 – Monolight [23.43]
  • 0:42:54 – Part Three [24.18
  • 1:07:12 – Part Four [23.40
  • 1:30:52 – Part Five [11.33]
  • 1:42:25 – Part Six [12.29]

  1. Incroyable! I was at that show in Montréal (yes it should be written with an accent, as it is a French name). I did not remember that this had been recorded…

    2. Hi aWc,
Would you still happen to have your ticket stub from the ’77 show (or any other TD gig)?
Would love to buy or grab a scan of for my archives and upcoming book of their concert memorabilia.
      Many thanks!

  2. I went to many of their live concerts of that time. This performance is great, but my favorite is the one they did on Madrid in 76. It was manly the Sorcerer themes and Stratosphear improvisations. I actually recorded the concert in a portable cassette recorder… only to find out afterwards that something had gone wrong and nothing was recorded, but to a certain extent it was recorded in my mind. The sorcerer songs were especially delightful with such a mixture of sequencer, mellotron and great synth parts. Memorable!!!

    1. Hi Angelus. Is there any chance you might happen to still have any of your ticket stubs from any of the concerts?
