These Two Apps (audiomux + midimux) Are About To Change iOS Music Making

Here’s a video sneak preview of the recently announced midimux and audiomux apps in action.

The two apps are designed to let you route audio and MIDI, between iOS and OS X, over your device’s USB cable.

midimux Features:

  • control iOS apps with hardware controllers that are connected to your Mac
  • sequence and play iOS apps using a DAW running on your Mac
  • use iOS apps to play and sequence hardware instruments that are connected to your Mac
  • control Mac applications or hardware connected to it, using Lemur, TouchOSC or
  • any other app that uses MIDI
  • connect more than one iOS device to the Mac – and send MIDI data between them

audiomux Features:

  • stream audio from your iOS Apps to your Mac and vice versa
  • Audiobus integration enables the use of countless iOS music Apps in your studio environment
  • connect multiple iOS devices to your Mac, each will create its own audio device
  • low cpu usage – so you can keep using all your apps
  • very low latency via USB

midimux is available now for US $9.99. audiomux will be available soon for $6.99. A bundle of the two apps will be available for $9.99, effectively making audiomux free to midimux owners.

Check out the video and let us know what you think!

    1. Hi bill,

the windows side of the midimux server is almost done, since we already used big parts of the same technology for touchAble, it will be finalized it in the upcoming days. we already started working on the audiomux server for windows, but have no ETA so far.

      cheers, pascal

  1. I wonder how well this performs relative to an iConnectMidi 2+ or 4+? Those devices have additional advantages; MIDI DIN ports, additional USB ports; but this might be a compelling replacement.

    1. Wow this is awesome
I love the value of my iOS synths like Korg gadget and animoog
And it’s control my hardware synths also
      Must buy

  2. Well.. So only 2 in/out. Multi routing would have been perfect. Bandwidth wise, it should be possible over USB 2.0, but maybe some restrictions from apple?

But to imagine to use multiple synths on the iPad, individually routed to each track in the DAW, and processed and recorded there, live. That would speed up my work flow.

Anyway. Cool feature. To bad I got the iConnectMIDI4+ now. But it might be perfect on the road.
And I love the possibilities for integration with the computer.

    1. 2 In/Out is only a restriction in this very first version – multiroute audio is being worked on 🙂 the usb connection is more than fast enough for multiple streams, and as far as i’ve tested it’s not restricted by apple.

At the moment the devices only receive and send the mixed stream of all inputs together. With the first update, each device will have one mixed stereo stream, as well as the single streams for each connected input.

      1. Just sold my Duet and iConnectMidi to downsize my gear, and now I am even happier I did, this will fill the void perfectly! Multistream routing will be the icing on the cake, but irrespective of that this is brilliant. Also, touchable is already properly awesome, so you guys are really killing it! Thanks!

  3. I still see this as a fiddly solution. It’s nice and it works but you have to set up no less than three auxiliary apps for something so basic as client-host communication. This could and should be transparently added in iOS, so here’s hoping for the next revision.

  4. “effectively making audiomux free to midimux owners.” does this line assure me that if I purchase midimux, when audiomux comes come out It will be free to me?

    1. Hey Aaron,

Yes! if you bought/buy midimux for 9,99$, audiomux will be free for you once it is released.
When audiomux becomes available we will set the bundle price to $9,99 and leave midimux at $9,99 for the time being. This way you’ll be able to ‘complete’ the bundle for free 🙂

audiomux will be priced at $6,99 standalone.

      1. I read about the bundle but could’t find it I had to pay an additional $6.99 for audiomux today after the $ buying midimux already @ $9.99

  5. The way I see it is that there should not be a need for any app or plugin to facilitate both core MIDI + MIDI over the plug-n-play USB interface. It is all available on the 30-pin /lightning connector. There only has to be the correct logic levels (high / low) on the correct pins.
    iConnectivity does it .

I think the digital audio bandwidth over USB is 96KHz.
Most USB-DAC’s accept the USB stream from iOS devices as standard without need for any app software or hardware in between.

  6. Couldn’t watch the video at the moment, does anyone know how the device is configured on the Mac side? I.e., does it get set up as an aggregate device?

  7. The bad side of this is that it depends on Audiobus. And it’s 16-bit restrictions. I work with 24-bit.

    Any ideas?

    1. I typically go 24bit or higher as well. I’m wondering if just using midimux, one can just stripe audio at 24bit or higher using the device’s audio line-out onto a DAW’s audio track.

  8. Looks promising, I have been checking out MidiLE and like that as well, although have some issues with my iPad mini because I am stuck at iOS 7.06…. Does anyone know if the future audiomux will support audio with 7.06, I read the specs on the site as midi working with 5.1.1 and above (THANK YOU! I CAN USE MY OLD iPAD1 as a dedicated Animoog or something!!!!!!)… will the audio portion be supported as well with these older devices or just midi? thanks so much….

      1. Another great reason for me to buy a new iPad! I have still have an “obsolete” iPad 1 which I have loaded up with whatever synths and effects that will still run on iOS 5.1. But the times, they are a changing’…

        1. Hi lyler, sorry i have to correct myself, we do officially support devices running iOS 7.x or higher.
audiomux is compiled for iOS 5.x+, but due to many problems we had with iOS 5.x we do not officially give support for iOS 5.x and iOS 6.x.

          1. Thanks for the reply Pascal! and clarification! so no “official” support for iOS5x (user beware but downloadable on device) or no release, and secondly will it support iOS6.07? Sorry for the litany of questions, but appreciate it, and good luck!

              1. HI lyler, sorry for my unclear statement. We will not release audiomux for devices running iOS. 6.x and lower in its first version. Beta testing showed us, that i causes two much problems at the moment. We’ll try to integrate iOS 5.x + 6.x in a future update, but just if we can solve all compatibility issues. cheers, pascal.

                1. Thanks Pascal for the responses and keeping up with this, appreciate it! and best of luck to you guys, we are all hoping you nail it!

  9. Thank goodness!! This is a feature that really should have been built into iOS / OS X !!

Then I can throw away my iConnectMIDI4+. Just kidding, but it has bothered me for a while that a separate hardware box was required to get audio/midi passthrough between iOS and OS X rather than just using the lightning to USB cable.

I still like the iCM4+ for connecting USB poly pressure keyboards to the P’08.

    1. hi guest, we already posted the following regarding the latency in the Audiobus forum, i hope it will be helpful:

we connected an iPad Air 2 and a MacBookPro 2013 via USB, sent MIDI from Ableton Live to a Synth running on an iPad and sent the synths audio-signal back to Ableton Live (we thought that would be a common use case). we measured the time it takes from sending the MIDI Note to receiving the audio-signal. mostly it depends on the buffer-sizes used:

      audiobus 128, ableton 32: ~6-7ms
      audiobus 128, ableton 32: ~9-11ms
      audiobus 128, ableton 256: ~15-16ms

      audiobus 256, ableton 32: ~12-13ms
      audiobus 256, ableton 128: ~14-15ms
      audiobus 256, ableton 256: ~19-20ms
