iDisplay Lets You Use An iPad As An Additional Display

In the latest episode of the iOS Update, host Mitch Gallagher takes a look at iDisplay, a screen-sharing app that allows you to use your iPad as an additional monitor for your desktop computer.

Along the way, Gallagher covers several ways that iDisplay can be used with desktop music software.

iDisplay is designed to let you use your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch as an additional display for your Mac or Windows computer. A version is also available for Android devices. See the iDisplay site for technical details and compatibility info.

While iDisplay focuses on wireless screen sharing, the app Duet Display focuses on using a wired connection to offer low-lag screen refreshes.

  1. Mitch emphasizes the screen real estate benefits. Though if someone is doing serious work in audio, having a second and even third monitor should be a no brainer.

What is especially useful about this, if it doesn’t wreak any unexpected havoc on ones system resources and stability– is that you have a wireless remote for recording. To be able to pull the transport, and a track list over to the iPad display and be able to cue up and record from the tracking room would be pretty handy, indeed.

  2. I tried Air Display which also does this and it taxed my Desktop too heavily to make it useful while running my music software. Does anyone have experience with both and can say if this is better?

    1. Duet Display (there’s a link in the article) does this over USB with pretty good performance, but who knows how it’d work with a hackintosh.

  3. Mitch is so good at these concise videos. Can we start a fund to buy him some new better fitting suits? Maybe he can send me the old ones—they’re more my size. 🙂

  4. Mr. Gallagher didn’t say but:

This app is designed for both iPhone and iPad and costs $9.99. Unfortunately, it has mixed reviews, only 2.5 stars for the latest version. I am interested in your evaluation if you have tried it with vst synths.

Duet Display is mac only…but gets good reviews.

(Mr. Gallagher has indeed lost weight. Hope he hasn’t been ill!)

  5. I am also worried about the reviews, some of which are terrible. I have Air Display 3 – which has USB connection – but you can’t use your fingers to start and stop the transport as Mitch demonstrates with iDisplay.
