Physical Modeling & Granular Processing With The TipTop Z-DSP (Deep Forest Demo)

Developer Christophe Duquesne (Springsound, Anchorage Spring) has developed a pair of new cartridges for the TipTop Z-DSP Eurorack module – a Physical Modeling cartridge and a granular effect cartridge.

This video is a preview of the new cartridges, and captures Duquesne & Eric Mouquet (Deep Forest) improvising three takes with the two new cartridges:

  • first take with a Buchla going 100% trhough the Physical Modeling cartridge (waveguides and other physical models)
  • second take with a Tempest going 100% through the Grain de Folie cartridge (granular effect)
  • third track adds a few additional synth with an OB-Mx

Details on the Z-DSP platform are available at the Tiptop Audio site.

  1. Christophe Duquesne’s stuff is great. I’m a big fan of the box o’ wonders that is SpringSound.

Can’t wait to see what is coming soon from him for SpringSound.

    1. Yeah… The video felt a bit like a joyful yet random exploration of digital video editing over a soundtrack of random noodling. Feels like a missed opportunity to showcase the power of these new cartridges.

    1. Kodama: My constructive criticism was meant to merely point out that the brilliance of these DSP cartridges is lost in the poor demonstration. Merely my opinion, yet it should not detract from the viability yet sadly it could for some.

And thank you for asking, since I have worked for nearly two dozen companies, as engineer/programmer to consultation work from Access, Korg, John Bowen to Elektron, Midas and many more. I’ve actually embarked on my first solo project. Cheers to you.

  2. I agree that it’s not the greatest demo but I feel it’s meant more as a tease than a real demonstration. Letting us listen to either card solo would have been great. Hard to tell what was “physical modelling” and what was “granular.” Either way I’m glad to see they’re still supporting this module. I’ve been trying to figure out a way to program some carts for a friends Z-DSP but all the utilities are Windows only.
