The Korg Mini Pops 7

This video, via AnalogAudio1, takes a look at the Mini Pops 7 – a non-programmable analog rhythm box from Keio Electronics – the company which later became Korg.

The Mini Pops 7 was released in 1971. It was used notably by Jean-Michel Jarre on his classic album, Oxygene.

Technical Details:

Recorded with a small amount of ambience from a Lexicon MPX-500. In the intro, the Mini Pops 7 is played through a EH Small Stone and a Korg SDD-3000 delay.

  1. I’ve heard this on so many other songs too but had no idea what it was. Beck’s Deadweight, the Fight Club soundtrack/score…

  2. The warm bassy overall tone is very pleasing to the ears although some of the percs are tuned and wonder of much it would influence musical harmonies.

    1. FS1R mass produced late 90s FM synth module.

MiniPops rare, pricey: good luck finding one. If Aphex Twin used it , it would hardly increase in price as it is already pricey.

        1. EBay last three months
          9 FS1R sold : starting from $675.

          1 Korg MiniPops7 : $780

          I agree : price similar.
          However MiniPops7 rarer.

There are MiniPops3, Junior Mini pops.
          Sample CDs of MiniPops.

          1. okay, I’m fairly ignorant on minipops, but the 7 does seem fairly inflated compared to the other models. On average the FS1R’s on eBay are going for at least twice as much as the price you posted there.

    2. FS1R pretty different : 8 Op FM not 6 not 4 + Formant synthesis.
This is why its a cult classic.
If it was just 4 Op 6 Op with no formant synthesis , then it would been in scrapheap.

Overlooked cause hunreds menu pages on small lcd. Until some famous names used it , drew attention to FS1R , people took a second look, and when they found how different it is its price rocketd somewhat.

  3. I am just going to leave this here:

You used to call me on my, you used to, you used to
You used to call me on my cell phone
Late night when you need my love
Call me on my cell phone…
