Make Noise has introduced a new Eurorack modular synthesizer, System Cartesian, that they say is designed to bring together the best of the ‘East Coast Synthesis’ (in the tradition of Moog modulars) and ‘West Coast Synthesis’ (Buchla).

Here’s how they describe it:

A complete modular synth that travels to ALL COASTs and puts the René Cartesian Sequencer to fantastic use along the way. This system is capable of Subtractive Synthesis, Additive Synthesis, FM Synthesis, Phase Modulation Synthesis, Ring Modulation, Amplitude Modulation and more… often simultaneously.

They shared Make Noise System Cartesian video demo:

The system includes:

  • New School Cartesian Sequencing: René
  • Analog Oscillator: STO
  • Digital Multi-Voice Oscillator: tELHARMONIC
  • Dual Analog Control Voltage generator: MATHS
  • Complex Random Voltage Generator: Wogglebug
  • Dual Low Pass Gate: LxD
  • Balanced Modulation and Mixing: modDemix
  • Mixing and Monitoring: Rosie
  • SKIFF case w/ power supply and AC Adapter, Ready to Play
  • Ships with 20 Ad Infinitum patch cables

The System Cartesian Eurorack modular synthesizer is priced at US $2,100. See the Make Noise site for details.

  1. While this does look like a great combination of modules, I really don’t think it has very many east coast elements at all. Some of the most significant omissions would be a fully featured resonant low pass filter and an ADSR which, I believe, are two of the most crucial components of an “east coast” style sound. Nonetheless this system does seem to cover a huge range of sonic territory in a small space.
