Vezér – A MIDI/OSC/DMX Timeline & Control App For Multimedia Artists

vezer

Developer Tamas Nagy, the founder of Imimot Software, let us know about Vezér – an OS X app that’s designed for control and synchronization of MIDI, OSC or DMX enabled environments, using timeline-based automation.

Vezér lets you create projects that combine audio playback and basic audio routing with MIDI, OSC or DMX. It can also handle realtime MIDI/OSC/DMX data recording during playback.

The application can also be a MTC master or slave, it can send MMC commands as well, and it can be synced to a MIDI Clock, too.

Imimot has curated a collection of video examples of projects that use Vezér on Vimeo and also shares examples via their blog.

Vezér is available for US $99. A demo version is also available. See the Imimot site for more info.

    1. Dave – Occasionally, we will post about hardware and software that is not new, but that we have not previously covered, so readers may not be aware of it.

This should be clear from the article: we do not call Vezér ‘new’ in the article, we note that the developer has brought it to our attention.

      Thanks for the feedback!

  1. good for controlling animatronics and motion control cameras, fast, visual, easy, stable … bad and not useful for complex light shows using DMX. In the light department is only good for triggering master scenes in a light console using artnet. In general really useful piece of software for integrate many departments in a time base playback show.

    1. You are absolutely right on Vezér is not the best choice for controlling complex light shows – because it was not designed to be something like that, using a Track based software for controlling hundreds of channel is probably not the most effective way to work.
However, I think the lighting department is not only about super-big shows, but small(er) light based artistic projects too, with only a few fixtures and/or LED strips, where Vezér still could be handy and fun-to-use in my opinion – I see a couple of interesting projects in the past years using Vezér’s DMX capabilities.

      1. I share your opinion for some dimmers, wash and spots lights Vezér can do the job perfectly.
You know something? they need to add ARTNET communication to Vezér.

        1. You mean controlling Vezér with Art-Net? Yeah, that is something we (I’m the developer of Vezér if that is not obvious) already planning for a long time, but not sure what would be the best way to handle that. If you have something in your mind, please drop us a mail!

          1. Im going to send you a mail. Im creating a new animatronic for a show and we are going to show it for the first time during Arduino Day event (2nd april)… we build a MIDI to servos control board with Arduino and Im going to use Vezér to perform the show.

I think Vezér is a very cool app. very good work… its very unique and fit exactly in some projects.

      1. In my opinion many free and traditional apps can do the job in clubs, bars and concerts but in a museum or fix installation they need a “one click show”. Vezér is an amazing and useful app but remember the user must add two or three mora apps to create and perform the show everyday.

In that “one click show option” I think maybe MagicQ from Chamsys can be a perfect solution for complex DMX installations. (the software looks like a HIGH END console). Its complex and deep, and its FREE! You can control video servers (hardware), lights and can use a master clock for the playback show. (the interfaces are expensive).

but if you go to the portable inexpensive solution you can create a repetitive show with some free apps and some small investment… for Example you can connect Ableton Live as master, and send MIDI commands to Video Apps (like Modul8, QuartzComposer, Millumin..etc) and to Chauvet ShowXpress for a maximum of 6 DMX Universe.

In a more extreme case a developer and some “makers” can use Open Source Solutions and build DMX interfaces with arduinos for just a few dollars.

Im a freelancer so i always try to find something I can buy for myself, Vezér is in my everyday tools but you must know the virtudes and limitations during implementation. (sorry for my english, I speak spanish).

        1. “…but remember the user must add two or three mora apps to create and perform the show everyday.”

Depending on the setup. Here is a Vezér-only installation, which ran for weeks without interuption: http://imimot.com/blog/project-showcase-topshop-crystal/

“…but if you go to the portable inexpensive solution you can create a repetitive show with some free apps and some small investment… for Example you can connect Ableton Live as master, and send MIDI commands to Video Apps”

So what is the difference here? Vezér could be the master too, so if I just replace “Ableton Live” in your post than this is still true -> for Example you can connect Vezér as master, and send MIDI commands to Video Apps 🙂

          1. some things I love about using Ableton as MASTER is that I can create something you can call “emergency loop” in moment the show must keep running lights and sometimes video loops and changes but can advance because an actor or something is “not ready” behind the scenes.

In a circus shows and Theater, or some dance shows I use these advantage of Ableton a lot… and have the chance of trigger or time stretch “clips of MIDI and sound” over a a linear show is very useful and also so many controllers compatibles with Ableton (Akai, Novation, Korg, etc) can make the setup and control of the show very easy.

At the end I feel recommending ableton is a very good option because you also can edit, stretch audio or compose some music all inside the same application.

            1. Good points, thanks for sharing your thoughts! Ableton is an awesome product for sure. It always pretty cool to see people using tools in different departments than what the product is really targeting. I mean Ableton is mainly a music production suite, but there are many people like you who using it for very different purposes. Great!
