Kymatica AUM An Audio Mixer For iOS

aum_6plus_smallKymatica has introduced AUM – a new audio mixer, recorder, and connection hub for your iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

AUM is designed to let you connect hardware inputs and outputs, Audio Unit extensions, Inter-App Audio apps, Audiobus, soundfile players, built-in signal processing and filters, in any configuration you want.

Highlights include:

  • You can route anything to anywhere, with mix-busses, effect sends, audiobus ports, and external multi-channel audio interfaces.
  • AUM also lets you play hosted synths and instruments using the built-in keyboard or external MIDI controllers, or sequence them from other apps using Virtual MIDI.
  • Record mixes, individual tracks, or both, straight into the storage space of AudioShare (no copying of files needed).
  • Play back recordings, soundfiles and loops as channel sources in the mixer for backing tracks, further processing or mixing.
  • Route MIDI in any way you like using the MIDI matrix.
  • Synchronize everything with the sample-accurate transport clock and play in time with other apps or devices using Ableton Link, a new technology that synchronizes beat, phase and tempo of Ableton Live and Link-enabled iOS apps over a wireless network.
  • Includes built-in processing nodes for various stereo processing, Mid/Side balance and conversion, EQs and filters, limiting, clipping and saturation. Or use any 3rd party Audio Unit extension or Inter-App Audio effect.
  • All controls in the mixer can be controlled via MIDI, including parameters of hosted and built-in plugins.

  1. For iPad music makers, this is a big deal.

Audiobus brought some of the interoperability that comes standard on a Mac computer, but didn’t quite give you the flexibility you need with signal & MIDI routing.

MiMix was an app that touched on some of the missing features, but was pretty limited.

Reading the feature list, this one seems to check most of the wishlist items.

For a live signal path, it will allow you to route, process, and record signal in unheard of ways. For in-the-box iOS DAW work, you’ll be able to integrate FX, synths, and recording apps in very clever ways.

    1. I don’t think so. As I understand it, AudioBus is going to bring all the apps to the table– get them all talking. And this app will just increase what you can do once all those connections are made. It’s a little unclear how configurations/presets will be stored (in AB or AUM).

    2. I don’t get how I still need audiobus if I buy this. I guess I don’t understand what the differences are and what this would do for me that audiobus doesn’t. Or how I would use both.
Could buy it and find out, but I’m not sure I need it. I know I want it.

  2. Oh my god! The Swede has done it again. Aum like the spiritual Hindu breath brings new life into music routing options. Absolute genius for absolute fun. Midi mixer in the iPad. Hurrah

  3. this seems almost too good to be true! curious to hear/see other’s take on it. I know their other software is top-notch, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this doesn’t disappoint.

  4. I wonder if I can combine this with Studiomux in any way? In the end I usually want the iOS audio sent to my desktop DAW, and Studiomux plug-ins do that perfectly via USB connection.

  5. Worth every cent and then some, this guy really can’t do wrong! Gave it a quick (well, two hours later….) test out on my iPad Air (gen 1) and I found it to be very responsive and super slick to use even with plenty of apps and effects all playing along. Truly a “must buy” for those who have a sizeable collection of music apps.

  6. Brilliant. I fully expect that this will be looked back on as the most important music making/utility app of the last couple years. Guy gets every single aspect of what musicians want and need. The only limits this thing imposes are on your configuribility imagination, and maybe your CPU. Thing is, those technical, efficiency aspects are so well taken care of they make almost every other piece of music software (and I have a ridiculous number and range of them to compare in iOS and Desktop) look vaguely behind the game. This should be the guy taking over all areas of core audio development with Apple. That is how good his work is. If you handed this over to an iOS music production Naysayer, with a high end DAC, a great outboard channel strip/mic/instrument plus all of the creative tools available for synthesis, sampling, processing, even Multitracking, they would get it in a big, big hurry.

  7. Insta-buy! Game-changer! Yes all trendy hyperboles apply here.
    Tack så mycket Jonatan!
Only 1 critique: why use a Greek Sigma (sum I guess?) instead of a certain Sanskrit symbol?

  8. This is amazing. I had Sunrizer and animoog being controlled by the midi keyboard at the bottom, while link was controlling the clock on triq traq and gadget. Sent everything to a bus through deadulus delay and recorded it in aum. Both gadget and triq traq were seperate pipes in audiobus so I could start and stop without leaving aum. iPhone 6s+, 9.2.1

  9. Can you set up controls for tempo with this app? For example could I create a knob that would increase and decrease tempo in this app, which would then change tempo on all live connected apps?

Another question is if I could create a knob that would send a value via midi cc.
