Tangerine Dream’s Peter Baumann Announces New Album, Machines Of Desire

PrintSynthesist Peter Baumann has announced a new album, Machines Of Desire, his first album in decades.

Baumann was a member of Tangerine Dream from 1971 to 1977, the group’s most important period, for many fans.

In addition to his work with Tangerine Dream, Baumann produced records by Conrad Schnitzler, Cluster and Hans-Joachim Roedelius;, released several successful solo albums; and founded the new age music label Private Music.

Here’s a preview of the new album, the music video for Dust to Dust:

peter-baumannHere’s what Baumann, right, has to say about the new album:

“In October 2014 an idea suddenly came to mind. Although I had spent much of my life performing, recording and producing music, my attention over the immediately preceding years had been focused on the philosophy and psychology of human nature. It was a rewarding exploration, but I missed being more creative – suddenly I felt the urge to play music again. I built a recording studio in my basement and began writing material for the first time in a long while.

In November I called Edgar Froese and we met in early January 2015 in Austria. It was an extraordinary encounter and it seemed like it would lead to a renewed collaboration after several decades. As many of you now know Edgar passed away on January 20th 2015, I miss him dearly.

Machines of Desire is filled with many influences, not least of them, my time with Tangerine Dream. Recording this album has been a very rich experience that fulfilled my creative desires, with more to come. I’m delighted that German record label Bureau B will release the recording in May/June of this year.

The title, Machines of Desire, reflects my belief that as human beings we’re driven relentlessly by our deepest desires: the desire to experience life and love, to be heard and seen, to connect with others, to be safe, to find meaning and purpose… and countless more. We find ourselves in the drama of everyday life with uncertainty at every step, with fear of loss and existential loneliness, and only occasionally interrupted by the fundamental joy of being alive.”

Peter Baumann’s Machines of Desire is scheduled to be released May 20th 2016.

  1. Bloody hell! This sounds just like the TD of old!

    In a way, you can tell who was the real creative force behind TD back in the 70’s, and it wasn’t Franke or Froese. Looking forward to hearing the rest of this LP.

    1. Can’t disagree with you more.
      – It doesn’t sound like Tangerine Dream of old, although it is evident that some of that history can be heard across all this time;
      – Tangerine Dream was effectively started by Edgar Froese, but throughout the Peter Baumann / Johannes Schmoeling years it was a very fruitfull cooperation of all its members, each being equal important to the final result.
      – Reading about Peter Baumanns philosopy and reflection on the being allive is great, and I tend to find much of that back in this new track and video.

      Can’t wait for the final release, this sounds like a beautiful concept.

      Only hope people will listen to this music for what it is, a new first step for a composer who was there at the very creation and childhood of electronic music. Don’t treat this as a Tangering Dream record, not withstanding all the achievements of that long lasting group.

      1. @ Van Gerven

        I know you mean well.
        Me too taken by classic 70s TD.

        However
        “for a composer who was there at the very creation and childhood of electronic music”
        NO sorry

        Leon Theremin, Adolphe Borchard, Halim El-Dabh, Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Bebe Baron, Daphne Oram, Delia DerbyShire, Tom Dissevelt, Stockhausen.

    2. Peter Bauman always gave the subtle touch of magic to Tangerine Dream, something beyond the comon ordinary music. As we can ear in his two first solo albuns.

  2. It sounds very nice. I hoped for a work similar in “touches” and air to Romance 76 (i ve the LP :-)))) ) and … There it is! It is nice beeing listening it now!

    @Wooo
    You have reason, but Van Gerven mean TD and Peter B. Are between the pioneers of POP (or rock, pop-rock…, as you want to say it) electronic music. The true pioneers of electronic music “not pop” or “serious” (if we can to speak in this way) are the ones you cited, among others. Thank you all.
