Tangerine Dream Documentary Announced

tangerine-dream-documentary TAG/TRAUM has announced plans for the first feature-length documentary about Edgar Froese & Tangerine Dream.

The film promises to include rare footage of Tangerine Dream; interviews with famous artists and collaborators, including Michael Mann, Volker Schloendorff, Brian May, Paul Brickman, Jean-Michel Jarre and Jim Rakete; and both current and former members of the band.

The filmmakers plan to fund production of the Tangerine Documentary via a Kickstarter project, which is expected to kick off May 1st.

Here are the details, in their words:

Dear Tangerine Dream Fans,

After nearly 50 years of band history, countless tours, albums and soundtracks with cult status, finally it will be realized: We are going to produce the first feature-length documentary about Tangerine Dream.

“To create something new one more time“, under this motto Edgar Froese wanted to approach his last work. Our film project will start with the same slogan.

In cooperation with the public TV channels ARTE, RBB, and the co-producer, Bianca Froese-Acquaye, our film production company TAG/TRAUM, will record Tangerine Dream’s musical heritage.

At the beginning of 2015, we have already started a short documentary about Tangerine Dream, but the unexpected death of Edgar Froese, founder and constant member of this band, has decisively changed our perspective on the musical and cultural legacy of Tangerine Dream. We just don’t want to cherish their history but also Edgar Froese’s long-lasting lifework.

In order to meet the new requirements we would like to change from a short to a long documentary (from 60 now to 90 min), which includes interviews with famous artists, Edgar’s companions, and collaborators like Michael Mann, Volker Schloendorff, Brian May, Paul Brickman, Jean-Michel Jarre, Jim Rakete and many EX-TANGERINE DREAM musicians as well as current members of the band etc. Additionally, we like to publish yet unseen footage of Tangerine Dream and Edgar.

But to meet this challenge we need you. We like to offer you the unique opportunity to become part of the production by supporting our crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.

  1. F***’n Kickstarters! 70K Quid? ($100,000)

Clearly nobody uses their own money anymore for business ventures. *facepalm

  2. What an ignorant reaction! Hardly anybody ever used their own money for business ventures. They got funding. Which is harder and harder to do these days in the arts, as the companies with all the money only want to invest in sequels and reboots of franchises. You think all your favorite movies, documentary or otherwise, were paid for out of pocket by the director? Well, they weren’t.

    1. Thank you. I am aware of the role of Producers in the TV/film industry.

It’s actually rather amusing how things can be so easily misinterpreted through text. Honestly, what I was trying to convey was that I don’t think it would be much of a movie at that low of a production cost.

Please don’t get the wrong idea (as if it makes any difference) but, I am a huge fan of TD, and think they deserve better than a low-budget bedroom-produced movie, and am hoping that the project obtains at least 5x it’s goal and results as a well thought-out and highly polished film.

  3. Listened to an interview today with Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson about their film Anomalisa. In the interview Duke described the problem they have been facing with piracy. A significant problem for a thoughtful film (i.e. any film that is not the Avengers/Transformers etc.). Especially for this film which was produced with stop motion film. 1 minute=1 week of work.

Long story short, they started with a Kickstarter, and I cant blame them. On a shallow investigation kisckstarter seems self narcissistic/lazy. In reality things are changing. Yeah, sometimes kickstarter is the tool of the lazy and unimaginative, but it’s equally lazy to instantaneously dismiss it. -Things change.
