Thonk has introduced an updated version of the Music Thing Modular Turing Machine.

Here’s a video preview:

The 2016 revised Turing Machine has many improvements:

  • Rotary loop length switch
  • Pulse out
  • Easier to build: a larger PCB in the same width, clock and noise circuits are more robust
  • Compatible with existing expanders

Features:

  • Aluminum panel with brand new design
  • Rotary length switch for selecting different pattern lengths
  • Pulse out = like step one of the pulses expander
  • Improved clock input
  • Compatible with older Pulses, Voltages and Vactrol Mix expanders
  • Two boards, includes Backpack for easier DIY layout
  • Trimmer for accurately setting the Lock level

It will be available in April, as a full kit or as a panel + PCB set.

    1. Funny that you said “just built” and then “several weeks”.
Where and when did you find stock? AFAIK old version its out of stock since a few weeks.

I’ve built mine almost 2 years ago so i think its about time for a new and improved module.

  1. interested in this, new version looks slick and the old one seems to be pretty universal in DIY racks, though I am generally skeptical of digital modules and especially algorythmic type things.

would love to hear people with one chime in on it, this seems like a mostly aesthetic and streamlining update rather than anything major.

    1. I have a feeling it has something to do with the 8-way switch. The Bytes expander for the old unit had to use 2 of these. I think this is a compromise to keep the unit at 10hp. Not problem for me – still plenty of variation.

What I want to know is if the new version will still be compatible with the old expanders especially Pulses and Vactrol Mix.
