High-Resolution Wow and Flutter Removal With Updated Celemony Capstan

Celemony_Capstan_1-2Celemony has just announced an update to Capstan, the company’s software solution for the removal of wow and flutter.

Capstan is used worldwide by classic record labels along with mastering and restoration studios, broadcasters and archivists, to rescue valuable historical recordings.

Based on Celemony’s patented DNA Direct Note Access technology, the software is capable of detecting wow and flutter from the music itself, regardless of the medium (magnetic tape, vinyl, etc.). Compared to other solutions that rely on reading the bias, Capstan even works in sub-optimal situations, such as when the source tape has been copied several times, or digitized at low sampling rates.

Free to current users, the update to Capstan v 1.2 offers an optional High-Resolution Mode that increases the resolution of the audio analysis by a factor of 4. This allows flutter frequencies up to 14 Hz to be eliminated, at the same time increasing still further the accuracy of the processing.

Pricing and availability. Capstan is available now via the Celemony website. For a small or short-term project, users can rent Capstan for five days for US$/€ 199 for five days.  A permanent Capstan license costs US$ 4,458/€ 3,790.

For more information, consult the Celemony website.

Here’s a Celemony video from the archive, in which product specialist Mathis Nitschke explains “wow and flutter,” and how it can be digitally eliminated and corrected:

    1. hehehe . totally true !-. that effect is very very cool , obviously if you want to add a “retro” effect , of course. But not only capistan does that effect. Deco tape saturator (another pedal from the same company Strymon) gives a wobble effect (a speed fluctuation) in the audio.

  1. The price on this is completely dumb. If you are adding wow & flutter then it’s a waste of thousands. You can do it better in hardware for $300ish… How many times a year do you actually remove wow & flutter? There are many ways to do this that do not involve a 1-1 trade of a day’s salary to use it for a week. $3k for this is one is the greediest price for software I’ve seen in 15 years.

    1. You didn’t get the point of this product. It’s intended for professional restoration/archiving facilities, not music makers.
Also, it REMOVES wow and flutter.

    2. I’m guessing this is targeted at archive restoration houses and not….you.

Also this is an update to the existing software that, according to the article,

“Capstan is used worldwide by classic record labels along with mastering and restoration studios, broadcasters and archivists, to rescue valuable historical recordings.”
