The Modor NF-1 Synthesizer At Superbooth 16

At Superbooth 16, Cuckoo talked with Marcel Belmans, creator of the Modor NF-1 synthesizer

The Modor NF-1 synth is a ‘digital & proud’ virtual analog synthesizer.

Video Summary:

One synth that captured my interest was the Modor NF-1.

A very digital synth with handy envelopes, a bit different sounding noises and a beautiful formant filter.

I had the opportunity to talk with the creator of the synth, about the process of turning his hobbies into a real project, and singlehandedly coming up with this synthesizer. Also taking it for a spin in the end myself, exploring different aspects of the synth. I found it to be lush, sharp and lovely. It’s taking advantage of the digital heritage in a very charming way, while also being able to go a bit wonky 🙂

  1. A friend of mine bought it and i was very pleased when i heard it. Very out of the ordinary subtractive sound. A digital synth in its best sense, sometimes a bit like older FM-synths with many extras and veeeery easy to use interface. I wish my old and sold Clavia Nordlead3 would have sounded like this. Not quite cheap but it could replace my DX11, MS20 and JP-8080 at once. A split or dual mode would be VERY welcome as a software update! 😉

    1. It’s virtual analog in that it follows the same sort of archetectural conventions as an analog synth; It’s proudly digital in that they’re not trying to mask it’s nature through faked analog variations, or emulated circuitry.

  2. Another innovative product that seems right from the beginning verbally victimized by not sounding like an ordinary analog/VA synth. The music would be so uniform and boring without these kind of sonical gems. I wish Modor good success!!!

  3. What a beauty. I really love synths with dedicated env/lfo strength knobs on each section. Just makes the whole thing so intuitive and quick.

Flexibility can be lovely (the other 93% of Super Booth!) but so can immediacy.

  4. When I first saw this announced last year, I was skeptical. But after hearing more about it’s architecture and how it sounds, it’s been added to the list of ones to get at some point.
