How To Record iOS Synths With Your Mac Desktop DAW

In the latest episode of his iOS Update video series, host Mitch Gallagher demonstrates how how to route audio from your iOS device directly to your computer, without needing an audio interface.

For users of OS X El Capitan or newer, it’s possible to record audio directly over your device’s USB to Lightning cable and Inter-Device Audio. Gallagher also covers creating an Aggregate I/O.

Are you using Inter-Device Audio for recording into your DAW? If so, leave a comment and share how it works for you!

    1. the pinout and signal paths are the same for lightning or 30-pin, the only difference is the size of the connector, you’re fine as far as that goes, but fewer and fewer apps will run on your 2,( Animoog still works with everything, and that’s plenty right there..).so, your pad is getting dated, but not for the reason you think, the newest pads (Pro ) are quad core CPU’s, and IOS is being written for that hardware now, it depends on what apps you want to run…

    2. I don’t know about you, but my cutting board won’t run great synths like Animoog, a powerful sequencer like ModStep or a flexible MIDI control app like Lemur.

If you can’t figure out how to make it a useful tool, pass it on to a friend!

  1. Yeah, I’m in the same boat. The catch-all phrase “iOS device” is pretty misleading if it means it needs a lightning cable to work. My iPad2 is looking longer in the tooth as every day goes by.

    1. Only last week did I finally upgrade my workhorse iPad 2 that has done me proud to the iPad Air 2. It’s a breath of fresh air! Hadn’t realised just quite how slow my iPad 2 had become. 🙂

    1. Its found in “Audio MIDI Setup” on the mac. No extra setup is needed on the ipad side. This is shown in the video.

  2. All these dud solutions…
How long’s the iPad been around for and still no full integration of both MIDI and Audio through that bloody lightning cable.
