New MIDI Looping App For iOS, Infinite Looper

Secret Base Design has introduced Infinite Looper – a new app that adapts audio style looping to performing with MIDI.

Infinite Looper let you quickly select different synthesizers and loop the MIDI to each, with perfect synchronization. Each of the instruments can have up to eight simultaneous loops. The loops can be of different lengths, up to sixty four measures long.

Features:

  • Internal SoundFont Engine – Built into the app is an extensive SoundFont library with hundreds of instruments, and multiple drum kits.
  • Inter-App Audio – Infinite Looper can host IAA-compatible synth apps
  • MIDI In and Out – The app recognizes MIDI from other apps, over Bluetooth connections, and from hardware controllers.
  • Loop sequencer – select different sets of loops for each section of a song, and the app will step through them automatically.
  • MIDI Export – Infinite Looper will export a MIDI file for a song, which can be loaded into professional desktop DAWs.
  • Keyboards and Pads – The app features a responsive piano-style keyboard — adjust note velocity by touching towards the tops of the keys. And because on-screen keyboards can be hard to play, there’s also ten pages of programmable pads.
  • Quantization and MIDI Latency – To lock down timing, you can toggle on quantization, or leave it off, for a natural feeling. If you use external MIDI controllers, the app can time shift to account for the delay of Bluetooth connections or WiFi. And if you use an audio-to-MIDI converter app like MIDImorphosis, latency compensation can tighten up the timing.
  • All the standards – Infinite Looper supports Ableton Link, making it easy to synchronize the app with other Link-enabled apps. There’s full support for Inter-App Audio and IAA MIDI, and Audiobus too.
  • MIDI Learn – If you’re playing live, your hands might be busy with a keyboard or a guitar. With MIDI learn, you can control the app with a foot controller. Toggle on and off recording, switch tracks, and more.
  • Import and Export – Easily share projects with friends using AirDrop, Dropbox, or by email.
  • Take Notes – Infinite Looper projects include a text notepad

Infinite Looper uses the Ableton Link library, the Audiobus library, and the MIDIbus library. Internal sounds are from the widely used SoundFont set by Christian Collins.

Infinite Looper is available for US $9.99 in the App Store.

  1. Would be nice if they would include 1/6, 1/12, and 1/24 values for quantize. Some of us like to use a triplet once in a while. But these are the 2000-teensies, the decade of the 16th note.

        1. Hi — I’m here too! There are some things (triplets) that should be pretty easy to add, and I can probably get different beats per measure (but probably for an entire piece, rather than switching repeatedly). I’m trying to keep the app easy-to-use for quick capture of ideas, and avoiding writing piles of code that would be used by only a handful of people.

WRT time signatures, for example — I think Infinite Looper would be a bad fit for some crazy polyrhythmic thing in the spirit of Tool, Dream Theatre, Zappa, Vai, Glass… There’s a lot of that sort of music that I enjoy, but maybe 1% of my potential customers would actually make any use of it.

I’m trying to stay open minded about things I’ll add, but I can’t do everything. So far, I’ve been blown away at the positive response; it seems like I’m scratching an itch that a lot of people have, and that the app is doing things people need. It doesn’t cover everything everyone wants, but there’s no way I could do that even if I wanted to…

          1. I like the basic premise so i will give it a try. I like the chord library.

Would also be nice to have chord progression library like that chtulu vst. An expandable library of chord progressions from modern to classical.

Checkout Cthulhu and “chords for Cthulhu”.

  2. Hmm, might be a solution for the long missing sound on sound type sequencer that roland drum modules used to have.

  3. Omg! Patrick, I can’t tell you how amazing this is! I’m neck deep in trying to build something like this in reaper with JS scripts, vst’s etc. I’ve been blown away by the complete lack of midi loopers that don’t suck. I’m a epercussionist that’s trying to build a rig where I can do solo synth-based techno live improv. No sequences, no samples etc. This looks like it will be almost perfect.

However, I will BEG BEG BEG BEG that if you do a desktop version, that you PLEASE do it as a VST for PC and Mac. You will have a way bigger market, and as a VST someone can use a free VST host if they want a standalone.

As a FR would it be possible to have IL record and play midi CC’s for automation? I’m thinking the ability to have automation tracks and sections to control things like filter sweeps, fader performance, etc.

God I can’t wait to dive into this thing!

    1. Very glad the app is resonating with people — there are times where you hack away on an idea that seems brilliant, and then you ship it out, and it’s crickets….

I’ll think about the VST/AU route a bit, and see what I can come up with. Doing things within a VST makes building the UI a lot harder, and also opens up compatibility issues (not every DAW supports every version of the VST frameworks — we’re finding this hassle with musicIO, with support tickets coming out of the woodwork, where the user has a DAW I’ve never heard of, that was written some number of years ago, and there’s some flavor of operating system — and the DAW works with some VSTs, but not ours, and I wind up trying to figure out if it’s something that’s broken in my code, something broken in the DAW, something broken in Windows, or…. who knows WTF is going on, could just be a configuration tweak needed…. Yeah, if you hadn’t guessed, programming VSTs has turned out to be significantly less fun than I thought it would be!).
