Designer Pavel Golovkin has introduced the Zont – a handheld synth design that uses GameBoy-style interchangeable cartridges to give it different sonic options.

The Zont system is made up of the handheld Zont synth, Zont sound cartridges and a docking system that adds additional connectivity:

The Zont system looks a bit like a calculator designed by famed industrial designer Dieter Rams, but also takes some design cues from the Teenage Engineering OP-1 synthesizer.

While the planned release of the Zont isn’t until Fall of 2017, Golovkin has shared these details:

  • Universal input interface
  • Stereo speakers
  • AMOLED display
  • Bluetooth connection
  • Wi-Fi cloud sync
  • Built-in rechargeable battery
  • Interchangable sound cartridges
  • 3.5mm headphone jack
  • USB-C
  • iOS and Android app

At this point, no audio examples have been posted at the Zont site. Check out the images, though, and let us know what you think of the Zont design concepts!

  1. this looks soooo coool!! i hope they don’t miss the boat like teenage engineering and have really cool bits of gear sans any good, deep patch editors…

  2. A list of details that don’t mention anything at all about the synth itself or the sound modules.

It looks like a list from a phone on the Verizon site.

  3. Zont looks like another bullshit arduino based kickstarter project using unfinished code while boasting its “hackability” meanwhile hoping to coast through it’s beta phase while letting unsuspecting early investors do all the product testing.

Take at korgs ds-10(+) or sunvox if you want unique and inspired mobile synthesis, I personally am finished with wannabe lsdj atmega developers peddling this pricey aesthetically pleasing, unusable shit.

    but i could be wrong

  4. count me in, this looks amazing. and yes, aesthetics are extremely important, its hard to be inspired working with an ugly piece of gear or plug-in.

People make amazing music with ugly-ass gear.

      Quit with the knobsniffing already!

  5. Folks, it’s the specs for the framework device. The synth specs will come with each of the cartridges (which are loosely described on the site). This is the host.

  6. I like the idea it’s handheld…….and it’s modular………….and you can hold it with one hand………….
It’s a nice design as well. Maybe colour the buttons……………..and put an SD card slot in there if there isn’t one.
