How To Sample Vinyl LPs

Here’s a quick demo of how to sample vinyl LP’s to make your own soundpack.

Mad Zach shows how he samples sounds from his vinyl collection and turns them into soundpacks.

Note: Anytime you sample other people’s work, you open a Pandora’s Box of legal issues. And it’s surprising how much bad information gets shared on this subject.

The SOS Guide To Copyright Law On Sampling is one exception. They note:

Should you fail to clear the original sample before releasing your own record, you may be faced with a number of unwelcome legal consequences. You could be sued for damages for copyright infringement and face an injunction stopping you from continued sale of any infringing copies, as well as having to recall and destroy any CDs or DVDs incorporating uncleared samples. Your record label could even lumber you with the costs of this remedial work.

  1. Here’s a quick demo of how to sample vinyl LP’s to make your own soundpack off the back of other artist’s hard work.

hmm maybe dont call it ‘your own’ sound pack, and uh, maybe dont expect any credit or cash for essentially learning to copy paste.

    1. Yeah, because it was so similar to the original work. Right. We should just ban sampling because synthtopia Tangerine Dream fanboys look down on it.

Do you even write music or do you just collect synths and make judgmental comments on the Internet?

  2. “…as well as having to recall and destroy any CDs or DVDs…”

oops…thats a pity for that beautiful art-lamp I made with all my leftover CD’s…

  3. Hmm I still find the whole “Copyright Law” law a bit unclear …

Especially if you dig into “Kraftwerk and Moses Pelham” or “Led Zeppelin and Randy Wolfe”.

  4. look out..these days if you sample and they come for you, they may take over half of your $2.92 royalties total you receive from Spotify. You could even get unlucky and they take 100% of your $2.92 total hard earned cash youve earned for your 1.2 million plays.

    ooohh…im so scared.
