What Do You Want To Know About The Behringer DeepMind 12?

Sonic State’s Nick Batt has one of the Behringer DeepMind 12 prototypes in the studio.

In this video, he gives a quick preview of the DeepMind 12.

Batt wants know what musicians want to know about the new analog synth, so that he can cover it in an upcoming review. So leave a comment, on the YouTube video or below, with questions you’d like answered about the new DeepMind 12.

  1. Would be great to listen to its sound palette without FX. That means pads, leads, monophonic, polyphonic, bass, snappy bass leads (so we know if it can do those), percussive sounds, arp/seq, without any FX. So far from all demos it is hard to say what it really sounds like as it has been drenched in FX-cheese. We want to know how versatile it is (or not) for professional music making. Thanks.

    1. Professionals don’t use FX? lol Analog purists make me laugh. Oscillators alone sound shit anyways, because of the very limited spectrum.

  2. many things was answered already in millions of posts, there is just few i wish to know:
    1. does it have the woody quality of sound when dry and on low notes
    2. even filter is based on 106 how far is it from moog 24 ladder, does it have juice and wetness and aggression, would you demonstrate there on some low note fast env arpegio or sequence plese
    3. is the quality of FX compperable with lets say sound toys, uad, waves…
    4. how easy is to setup modulation and how fast and intuitive is to find what is already modulated and with what
    5. is it possible to just drill the hole in for audio in like on iPhone 7 for headphones
    6. would you say is more performance kit rather than sound design {i am bit skeptic cos of those osc 1&2 possibilities}
    7. compare to DSI prophet or OB would you say is the same level or is lacking something and if it does what is it
    thanks Nick, i hope you will enjoy the review

  3. 1. Build quality?
    * keyboard feel – synth action or (semi)weighted
    * keyboard – do keys make a noise when played ?
    * controls – sliders, knobs
    * buttons

    2. Display visibility / contrast / ease on eyes ?

    3. (As per Fatdust above) – Oscillator scope for sonic source ?
    – number & type of waves

    4. Envelopes ?
    – minimum attack / snappy
    – low range / high range (fast / slow)

    5. Input / Output connections ?

  4. Does it like to drag up on weekends and prefer to be called Shirley ?
    YES- behringher should clean up and make an analogue drum machine

  5. I suspect many of us would like to see an audio input, but know that it isn’t there. Probably won’t appear on the table-top version either. The question would require taking it apart to see how hackable it might be.

  6. I’m interested in what the AR capabilities of the DM12 are & if all the synths features are catered for. Also are there any other future upgrades that can be talked about?

    1. Look at the beginning of the video, where Nick demonstrates the curve feature of the envelopes. Or is that not what you refer to by AR?

  7. I want to know if the legato works the same as on a monophonic synth like the Minimoog?
    A lot of synths re-trigger the note in mono-mode, in legato it should slide to the next note while the previous note is still being held.

  8. Very good hands-on video by Nick Batt, going in on what musicians of various types and performers are interested in (and offering room to answer more questions!).
    Really appreciate this one Nick, and its the first independent video on the Deepmind 12 in this kind giving a more broader introduction of this synth.

    This surprised me with various insights, most of all the curve feature on the envelopes.
    My question would be whether the envelopes, or at least one of them, has a looping feature, which would be awesome in combination with the envelope curves.
    Other impression I get now, which has not been clear from all predecessor non-Batt videos, that the Deepmind 12 is a broad and very interesting synth in its own right.

    What struck me, in some of the unisons, is that the oscillators and filters are perfectly tuned. This immediately makes me think of a modification in which the oscillator phases and filter cut off frequencies can be (slightly) detuned individually, giving that really broad analog impression of the early 2- 4- and 8-voice SEM oberheims (yeah, I know the SEM has different oscillators and filters. If I wanted that I would get a SEM or a clone or a DSI OB-6. I’m just referring to the non-perfectness of these older synths which I would prefer to using any effect section). I’d make it switchable between the Behringer original and the modification.

    So thanks for this video, and looking forward to its successor which may answer many more questions from a broad range of musicians and performers.

    1. “What struck me, in some of the unisons, is that the oscillators and filters are perfectly tuned”
      – that would be because they are DCO’s (Digitally Controlled Oscillators), so can be precisely tuned and rock stable.

  9. Can it make single oscillator deep minimoog style basses?
    Of course it is not its purpose but I’m looking to replace my monophonic synth with a polyphonic one without losing the basses.

    Thanks a lot

  10. Noise. How much does it put out when it’s not being played, but is plugged into the board and turned up? Will I have to mute its channel on the mixer?

  11. I want to know if there is an Oscillator Drift feature – either random or controlled in some way ?
    – would be great for making ‘Boards of Canada’ style sounds !

    1. That’s the oscillator / filter phase modification I was referring to Mick. Yes, I’d like that question to be answered too!

  12. Please Uli Behringer, make it look more Analog!! Do not put the Display in the middle even if it makes sense! It looks like an average Workstation not that sexy! And please use Faders and switches and knobs to make look like an real analog and than it will be my favorite ;o)

    1. Another retarded analog purist who hates modern rechnology. I bet he also uses vinyl and love scratches and noise, because it sounds more ‘authentic’. smh

  13. Can the osc/vca pan independently? Thats my favourite feature of the Oberheim Xpander/Matrix12 for huge unison voices and broad drifty pads 😀
