Tangerine Dream Announces New Studio Album, Quantum Gate

Tangerine Dream has announced a new studio album, Quantum Gate, that they say represents founder Edgar Froese‘s final vision for the pioneering electronic band.

The album is due for release on September 29th 2017, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the founding of the band. The album will be the first full album of new material since the death of Froese in 2015.

The Quantum Years

In late summer 2014, Froese – along with band members Thorsten Quaeschning, Ulrich Schnauss and Hoshiko Yamane – began work on what was planned to be the first album of Tangerine Dream’s ‘Quantum Years’.

The goal was to create a contemporary take on the band’s trademark sound of the 70s and 80s. Froese was inspired by concepts from the fields of quantum physics and philosophy, and wanted to attempt to translate them into music.

Over the last two years, Quaeschning, Schnauss and Yamane have worked to realize Froese’s vision. The compositions on Quantum Gate are based on ideas that Froese had outlined, and on musical sketches that he had prepared for the group.

As a result, the band says that “Quantum Gate is just as much a new beginning as it is a testament to Edgar’s never-withering inspiration and ever-flowing creativity.”

TD has announced pre-orders for the album, including a variety of limited-edition options.

    1. Yes!

I’ve sen a lot of TD purists rant about how it’s not TD anymore without Froese. But the current lineup is better than any since the Froese/Franke/Haslinger lineup – which was 30 years ago.

Their recent live double CD is excellent – blows away any of the live stuff that TD has released in decades.

It’s great to see them return to form as an electric band, vs being a large band with some electric keyboards.

  1. Why do some artists lose their eye for cover art after a certain point? There are a lot of great artists out there working now, and they’ll work for cheaper than they did in 1975.

  2. I agree, the artwork looks like a high school Photoshop project.
And I’ve said it before, I’d have more respect for this band if they didn’t ride on the coattails of TD and they chose their own name. Their music isn’t bad, IMO, much better than what Edgar was doing for the last 25 years.

  3. Edgar’s choice that TD should continue, so not yours. You choice is whether you want to support it or not, if you don’t, then move on, there are thousands of great artists to enjoy.

  4. Nice and respectful that, reveals a lot. It’s just music, if you don’t like it that’s more than fair enough.
