How To Get Started With Eurorack Synth DIY

Spain-based Eurorack manufacturer Befaco shared this series of videos, embedded above, that offer a guide to getting started with Eurorack synth DIY.

The video series covers tools for synth DIY, learning how to solder, electronic components and building a simple kit.

If you’ve got your own tips or resources for DIY modular synth building, share them in the comments!

  1. Synthrotek also has some great kits. I’ve built their VCA and VCO kits. The VCA requires an oscilloscope for “tuning” so I don’t know if they would be great for electronics beginners. The VCO has lots of options with multiple simultaneous waveform outputs. There are a ton of great effect pedal kits that might be better for beginners (byoc kits sound great and have top notch components).

  2. Thonk has a good selection of DIY eurorack stuff, from bare PCBs to full kits, from simple to complex projects.

  3. I have to throw our hat in: AIsynthesis.com not only sells easy to build kits and PCB/panels, but we are the only company to not only offer free schematics and step by step instructions with pictures for every part, but full how to videos as well!

  4. I keep a stock of parts for synth DIY. When building always order lots of extras of every part you order. Certain parts are very common – apart from resistors and capacitors it’s a good idea to have lots of op amps (TL072/TL074) and transconductance amps (LM13700), jacks, pots, headers. Surface mount stuff is becoming more and more popular in DIY, so for those chip resistors and caps consider getting 0805 stuff, which in a pinch can be kludged onto 1206 or 0603 pads (anybody making diy kits with smaller components are jerks). By maintaining a small inventory you can usually save a bundle by just ordering PCB/panel sets and the few additional parts you’ll need, instead of full kits.
