The Apprehension Engine – ‘The Spookiest Instrument On Earth’?

The Apprehension Engine is a one-of-a-kind electro-acoustic instrument, commissioned by film composer Mark Korven, for creating horror music.

Korven wanted a better way of getting unique sounds for his soundtracks, so he worked with luthier Tony Duggan-Smith to create what is described as ‘the spookiest instrument on Earth.”

The above video offers an introduction to The Apprehension Engine, while the video below offers a demonstration of the instrument’s sonic possibilities.

  1. There are so many effects applied! I believe this way we could get a similar sound with just a guitar for instance, not to mention more complex instruments
