5U Modular Synthesis Masterclass With Junkie XL

Holkenborg uses his modular system to generate musical material that he can use on his soundtrack projects. He sets aside Sunday as ‘modular day’.

“Whatever I do on Sunday is going to get recorded in Cubase,” he told us in a recent interview. “Then, at the end of the day, I just sort it quickly, these are bass sounds, that is drones, that is this, that is that.”

In the previous episode, Holkenborg demonstrated this patch and his process of jamming with his modular to generate musical material for soundtrack work:

  1. Hey Tom, I am noticing some minor buzz in the right channel. I heard it in the earlier video as well. Is that a ground loop issue you are dealing with, or is that coming from your mic? If it is a ground loop issue, what are you doing to get rid of it?

  2. Ever get the feeling that Junkie XL (who?) is either a relative or favourite of the person who posts news about him on here?

    1. Yeah, why else would they cover a successful film composer demonstrating how he uses one of the world’s biggest modular synthesizers???
