Revolution Of Sound: Tangerine Dream Documentary Debuts Sept 7

Revolution Of Sound: Tangerine Dream is a new documentary that looks at the work and legacy of electronic music pioneers Tangerine Dream.

The film, by Margarete Kreuzer, debuts Sept 7, 2017. Scheduled screens are listed at the RealFiction site

Synopsis:

Bislang ungehörte Klangstrukturen entstehen – angelehnt an klassische Musik.

Synopsis (Googlish Translation):

“TANGERINE DREAM is science fiction!” – Edgar Froese

With his band TANGERINE DREAM, Edgar Froese, pioneer of electronic music, was on a lifelong search for the ultimate sound. He processed heartbeats and breath sounds, experimented with synthesizers and sounds that NASA and ESA found in space.

The band is founded in a time when the cosmonauts Juri Gagarin and Neil Armstrong break into new worlds. At the end of the 1960s, the Cold War was in full swing and the universe became a place of longing. TANGERINE DREAM creates sound worlds that catapult the listener into other spheres and expand awareness without drugs.

The musician Edgar Froese learns the game with the unconscious at Salvador Dalí. Dalí is fascinated by the band (“I love this rotten religious music!”) And predicts Edgar Froese a glorious future.

In the 70s and 80s, TANGERINE DREAM founded the so-called Berlin School, banished classical instruments from the stage, and made space for large-scale moogs and synthesizers, with which they staged spectacular stage shows in front of hundreds of thousands around the world. Richard Branson of Virgin Records invites the band to Oxfordshire in the early 70s. This is the album “Phaedra”, which takes TD into the top ten of the British charts. The album “Alpha Centauri”, “Breath” and “Time” precede this success.

Edgar Froese himself is in the film the narrator post mortem (Spokesperson: Alexander Hacke).
With citations from his autobiography he leads the viewer through the documentation. He tells of his longing to overcome the limits of time. Time is an important term in the creative process of TANGERINE DREAM. Sounds are constantly repeated, transferred to instruments in different variations and reproduced. Until now unheard-of sound structures arise – based on classical music. Inspiration was found by Egar Froese with Johann Sebastian Bach and Joseph Haydn, with their sequences and variation techniques.

Hollywood discovers TANGERINE DREAM and numerous film music are emerging, Such as William Friedkins’ Sorcerer, Ridley Scott’s Legend, Paul Brickman’s Risky Business, Michael Mann’s Thief, or Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark.

The film shows previously unpublished film footage, shot by the bandleader personally and his close environment. For the first time, we will see the band behind the scenes, both on tours in Europe and America, as well as during the photo shoot with Jim Rakete or on the seaside. Records and interviews with his wife Bianca Froese-Acquaye, his son musician Jerome Froese, with band members, close confidants and friends, characterize the unique band history of TANGERINE DREAM.

  1. I’ve seen this on German TV some months ago already and it’s been in cinemas here for some weeks now. So I wonder: Is this just the debut for the English-speaking market?

  2. The version aired on GERMAN TV was the short ARTE version, this is the kick-starter funded, re-edited and extended version (87 minutes). As per usual Synthtopia is rather late with on this, the doc having already been shown in Australia, Denmark, Germany and South Korea. SEPT 7 makes the official cinema release in Germany, after that IF there’s interest outside of the country. DVD to follow (no date or information). Other screenings include:
