Softube has introduced the Buchla 259e Twisted Waveform Generator plug-in for Modular, its virtual modular synthesizer.

According to Softube, the software version features “all the digital waveshaping, aliasing noise and foldover frequencies of the original hardware. Enjoy the self-modifying, screeching, snarling responses from the original’s downright odd inner workings.”

The Buchla 259e Twisted Waveform Generator

The 259e consists of two separate oscillators—Principal and Modulation—where Modulation can be used either to modulate the Principal oscillator or as a separate generator of audible notes. Furthermore, the sine wave generated by the Principal oscillator is simultaneously applied to two of the eight available waveshape tables. A morph voltage pans between the two tables and a warp voltage varies the amplitude of the sinusoidal (driving) waveform. Both these functions can be modulated by the Modulation oscillator.

Features:

  • First officially licensed Buchla plug-in
  • Perfect for ‘screeching, harsh and digital sounds’
  • Can also be tamed to sound quite smooth and organic. Can morph smoothly between these softer sounds and the more in-your-face sounds
  • The digital parts are ported from the hardware line by line, the wavetables byte by byte, and the analog parts are modeled component by component

Pricing and Availability

The Buchla 259e Twisted Waveform Generator is a $79 plug-in for Modular, which is priced starting at $99. See the Softube site for details.

    1. It can be had for $67, but that’s still more than I paid for a stock modular package. In light of a competition from VCV Rack (which already beats Softube by the ease of use) that’s insane.

      1. Softube sounds so much better than vcv , and is actually easier to use than vc, the patching especially. Both have there place.

This bulca block sounds fantaststic btw and is a welcome inclusion to the modular software, very noisy and fun.

  1. I hope VCV or Softube incorporate som of the Erica Synths wavetable modules, and the Waldorf wavetable and the other hardware one produced recently I can’t remember the name.

    1. I think in VCV Rack there are only modules that have fully open source hardware/software (Befaco and Mutable Instruments). Erica Synths and Waldorf are not open source so hardly it will be in VCV.

  2. this little modul himself uses on my i7 990 Xtreme 6 core cpu “only” 7% cpu ….. wow great work now I need an highend processor from the year 2217 to make some cool patches…
