New Physical Modeling Synth For Mac, Derailer

Derailer is a new modular physical modelling synthesizer for Mac, based on two basic elements:

  • One is a metal bar that you can strike or bow;and
  • The other is a nonlinear spring connection.

This allows you to join two bars together so that vibrations from one create sympathetic resonance in the other. By connecting multiple bars you can create new instruments that have their own unique sound.

There are 37 strike bars, 5 resonators, and up to 81 connections to play with. The adjustable physical parameters and nonlinearity of the connections produce a wide range of tonal variation that reacts to striking velocity or bowing pressure.

  1. Every synthesist needs at least one physical modeling synth, IMO. Its as weirdly distinct as FM and plays a similar role when you need a standout sci-fi lead or unique pad. Keep in mind that a PM synth has a stripe of pure organic chaos in it, so you have to deal with sudden harmonic peaks or retriggering issues you may or may not like. This is a good demo and Derailer looks like a useful instrument, but be prepared to grapple with its eccentricities. I’ve been enjoying Logic’s Sculpture for years and there are still places where its like a greased pig!

    1. I am also a long time Sculpture enthusiast, and its PM eccentricities are why it’s probably my favorite synth. I’m also a sucker for things like Chromaphone 2 and Kaivo.
I was using the beta of Derailer for months, and it also has that kind of weirdness that I like. Unfortunately, the production version is about $223 USD!!
