At Superbooth 2018, Behringer was displaying a wide range of engineering prototypes of clones of classic electronic music gear.
We talked with Rob Belcham, Senior Principal Systems Engineer at Music Group, and got a quick overview of what Behringer had on display.
The synth prototypes included:
- The MS-101 prototype, a clone of the Roland SH-101;
- The VC340 – based on the Roland VC330;
- An ARP Odyssey clone;
- A Pro-One Eurorack module, in the same form factor as the Behringer D; and
- The RD-808 – an updated clone of the Roland TR-808.
Many of the synths displayed are being developed by a team in China and are prototypes, so the UK-based engineers that we talked to were seeing them for the first time at Superbooth. Belcham, however, is supervising the development of the RD-808, a clone of the classic Roland TR-808 drum machine, so he was able to give us a lot more insight into its design and development.
The new clones are still in the development stage – so their design, specs, sound, etc are all preliminary, and no release date is being announced at this time. Belcham and the other Behringer representatives that we talked with were careful about making concrete promises about release dates, but they expect most of the gear displayed to be released in 2018.

Dude seemed a bit confused to learn there was a secret Chinese development lab kicking his rear and which would possibly soon replace the costly UK R&D lab.
Pretty cool that the Odyssey will be fully original but add a 64 step sequencer, arpeggiator, and digital effects unit.

The many new features on the 808 clone seem pretty great, looking forward to hearing what they sound like.
Interesting that they are openly just saying, yeah, this is a clone of that instrument.
hopefully the Odyssey has an analog ring mod circuit, unlike the Korg versions. I really don’t know why Korg skipped giving that feature the real treatment.
