Richard Devine On Sound Design For The Jaguar I-Pace & His New Album, Sort\Lave

At the special event on Sept 14th to introduce the Yamaha MODX synthesizer, we talked with composer and sound designer Richard Devine about two of his latest projects: sound design for the Jaguar I-Pace electric car, and his new album, Sort\Lave.

One of the design challenges of electric cars is that they are relatively silent, compared to traditional cars – but there are safety and legal requirements for them to be audible.

Devine told us that he created a library of the sounds of classic Jaguar designs, and then tried to synthesizer new sounds that met the functional requirements of electric cars, but met the aesthetic requirements of the design team, worked together as elements of a complete sonic design, and ‘sounded Jaguar’.
