Elektron Model:Samples Review

In this video, Telekom Electronic Beats gear guru Stimming takes a look at the new Elektron Model:Samples, introduced at the 2019 NAMM Show.

Elektron says their new 6-track groovebox gives you “pretty much all of the Elektron superpowers in a sleek, lightweight, and accessible package.”

Check out Stimming’s review to see his take on it – and how it measures up to Elektron’s Digitakt and Octatrack.

      1. Oh, what’s happening right now ? I just replied to my comment. Who are you mister ? I am me. And you. And I reply to myself.

      1. Good point. Them dropping this didnt suddenly make my AR, A4 and Octatrack disappear. This is an odd direction and was hoping for more on the line of the Digitakt/Digitone but we cant have everything. But if this is the direction they went with this new product. Its not looking too good for anyone hoping to get anything as fully featured and jam-packed as their dark trinity and the monomachine/machine drum days.

        1. Exactly. They’ve actually released amazing updates for those boxes over the last few years.

My Analog Keys is way better than when I bought it. How many pieces of gear can you say that about?

Analog Keys & Octatrack are a peak Elektron, in my book. But they are also complicated as ****, and there products could really benefit from them developing more easy to use gear, like the Model:Samples.

My hope is that, after they do the Model:Synth, they’ll come back around and revisit the high end market and come out with something to replace the Analog Keys that has the power of the original, but more polyphony and better usability.

  1. He calls the box out for having Micro USB, as if it’s old fashioned. The reality is that the current generation of microcontrollers typically only run with USB2.0 transport (which is fast enough to do the stuff they need to do).

It’s possible to run USB2.0 over a Type C connector, but the end result is simply that a more expensive cable is needed to plug it in.

  2. Elektron’s odd, illogical interface and menu diving kept me away, maybe I’ll try this one out. It looks like this Model Sampler has an organized workflow. I don’t want to be burdened with complex operations that can hamper my improvisational creativity. This video has sold me, but the only thing left is to demo this at a store and see if the audio quality is acceptable.

  3. I hope it is not a Teenage Engineering scenario where the products start to look like tiny 90’s keychain toys and displayless VCR remotes.
