SOMA ENNER Synthesizer (Sneak Preview)

SOMA Laboratory shared this sneak preview of the ENNER, the first of a new line of instruments, designed to be direct transmitters of emotional energy.

Here’s what designer Vlad Kreimer has to say about the ENNER:

“I had got the idea of the synth while I was listening to the track of danish sound-artist SiSTOR:

I thought that we need more flexible instruments for such artists and started to think about how it could be realized. We got in an art-dialogue and decided to try to make the synth together.

Here is the result.”

Pricing and Availability

The ENNER is currently in development and is expected to be priced at about 500 Euros. See the SOMA site for more information.

  1. The design, layout, and sound examples are pretty cool.

Some of the hyperbolic claims of the video go a little too far for my tastes. But I can see they just need to capture our interest. It does seem quite responsive and gives you the ability to make very spontaneous noises. It’s kind of gritty and lo-fi.

As with many objects like this, the buyer should know what they are getting before they buy it. For the person who is looking for that kind of noise making fun, it looks like quite a thing.

    1. I agree. Two decades ago noise artists patched a couple of guitar pedals and created some interesting soundscapes. Today there are quite a lot of noise gadgets that sound the same with a novel interface. This is only new to those who missed the noise and industrial music movement.

      1. There is nothing fundamentally new in music. What we should now focus on is how to make music, the instruments and more specifically their interface. SOMA is going in the right direction here. The way I see it this is not about creating something that has not been done before but making at available in a more immediate way. Compare this going from punched cards and tape loops to voltage controlled synthesizers.

  2. Soma Laboratory can do no wrong. Pure evil, yes. But no wrong. 😀
Also, happy they got Galadriel to do this demo.

      1. Hippie. Sandals, beads, burning Palo Santo, maybe even some LSD. Definitely hippie shit. Just watch the video.

  3. I usually really like Kreimer’s stuff but isn’t this just a less feature-rich Landscape Stereo Field (not to mention uglier…the Stereo Field is a work of art)?

  4. Look, if you’re gonna say it works using “emotional energy” I want the demos to include a happy person playing it, a sad person, an angry person. Back up your claims, hippies!

    1. On the Superbooth SOMA guys made a presentation of the synth at the end of which the audience was able to play ENNER. I’m not sure that I could say who was more angry or happy but I definitely felt different vibes very clear from the first seconds of playing. It like reflects some personality very easy.
