Synth Jam With Roland SH-2, Novation Bass Station II & Live Drums

Synthesist Alfonse & drummer Ian Bostic shared this synth jam for Roland SH2, Novation Bass Station II & live drums.

Here’s what they have to say about it:

Live jam featuring Ian Bostic on drums and Alfonse on the Novation Bass Station II, as well as the classic Roland SH2 monosynth from 1979.

With the tuning of VCO2 going a bit unexpectedly wild on the original jam, I ditched the SH2 bassline and re-recorded it on the Bass Station afterwards, followed by a subtle and understated lead part using the SH2, with effects provided by the Boss CH-1 Super-Chorus pedal and Boss DD7 and Vestax DDX digital delay pedals.

Some additional reverb was added to the synths at the mixing stage.

  1. This jam is not really my thing (I’m not a big fan of shredding), but I totally love the unmistakable tone of that particular vintage of Roland synth – the SH-2, the JP-4, the ProMars. It is immediately recognizable and nothing else sounds quite like it.
