I have been working on a real-time version of the Solar piece from a couple years ago. Since it is going to be responding to people’s voices and ambient noise instead of music, I started listening to podcasts while I was developing it.

I made this video to commemorate my new found love for WNYC’s RadioLab podcast. Thanks to Branden Hall and Bill Lindmeier for introducing me to it.

NSFW: This Wired feature takes a look at a new 360-degree interactive video system that media lab Obscura Digital is creating to install in a Las Vegas penthouse.

The technology looks amazing – but it looks like the content they are preparing for the penthouse cinema install is pretty dumbed-down and sexist. That may be perfect for a Las Vegas install – but I’d like to see a system like this configured to create cutting edge generative graphics, based on music – something like the psychedelic graphics of Glenn Marshall. That would create an incredible dance environment.

Critter and Guitari’s Color Television Oscilloscope is a $99 device that turns your audio input into psychedelic video output:

This video device has an audio input and video output. It behaves like a traditional oscilloscope, with a control to change the display mode and colors. The sweep rate is fixed at the NTSC frame rate, about 30 Hz.

One knob controls the input gain, and the other controls the display. There are 2 modes: line mode, and color shifter mode. The first half of the knob rotation is color shifter mode, and the second half is line mode. Line mode is simply a line with adjustable width and color. Color shifter mode is made up of bars that change color. The rate of change is adjustable.

This is a demo video of 64 (Video) Fingers, a free monome audio and video sequencer, inspired by Kutiman’s Thru-You videos.

This videos shows Livid Instruments’ Ohm64Editor version 1.02, which introduces the LED pattern maker. It is useful for creating interfaces and patterns on your controller.

The Ohm64 is a programmable interactive MIDI control surface designed to give you hands-on control over your performance.

The MAX/Msp source code for the editor is available and can be downloaded from lividinstruments.com.

This is a teaser trailer for Glenn Marshall’s iPhone music visualization application, Zio.

Marshall is known to Synthtopia readers for his amazing generative music videos.

About Zio, Marshall says:

I would say I’m at the half way stage now, and after doubting almost daily the project and my ability to realise it, for the first time I feel confident that I can actually pull this off and come up with something half decent on the iPhone.

The direction I’m taking for my first app will be based on the ‘Music is Math’ animation style, semi-abstract, in black and white – roots and vines growing endlessly in real-time. It will be interactive, respond to touch,orientation etc, have randomising features and maybe a few other tricks.

The demo runs smoothly at 24 fps, it can run a lot faster, but I need headroom to implement the rest of the visuals to be added – to be included next will be the shading/shadow algoritms (more bitmaps), the sprites/particles flying around through a perlin noise field, and also I can hopefully have a duplicate layer of the growing vines in the background, as is common in all my videos to date using this system.

Marshall adds:

I want to create something enigmatic, sublime. Like my mum said when I showed it to her, it’s peaceful to watch, like an aquarium… which is a very good comparison.

Marshall’s work reminds me of fractals, in the way that they seem to offer infinite detail as you look closer, and of Brian Eno’s music, in the way he creates controlled processes to create something beautiful.

It’s been a long time since Microsoft came out with something cool enough to make people drool, but VPlay could break that dry spell.

VPlay is a multi-touch tabletop application that lets you mix and manipulate multiple video streams in real-time.

According to the Microsoft researchers behind VPlay:

Our aim is to explore how such an interactive surface can support and augment practices around VJing – a form of video performance art that is becoming increasingly popular in nightclubs and other music events. We conclude with observations from a field deployment, which highlight some initial thoughts and reflections on our design rationale.

That description doesn’t really do VPlay justice, so I’ve embedded another demo video below.

Surya Buchwald, aka Momo the Monster of VJ Kung Fu takes a look at structuring a VJ performance:

So much of Visual Performance is improv – anticipating where things are going and reacting in interesting ways. I was thinking about this recently, and about how I’m always winging it when it comes to preparing for a show (unless it’s one where I’ve gotten to really practice with the Audio artist). I remembered how much easier it was to practice improv comedy through the use of games – with real structure.

With a head full of nostalgia (and a healthy dose of MVC and Framework research I’ve been doing recently for work), I set out to create a structure for my performances.

He goes on to outline a four layer approach:

1. Background – Scene-setting clips.
2. Playground – Video Instruments (Quartz Composer)
3. Foreground – Elements on black, textures.
4. Overlay – Logos, text.
