Jack DeYoung has posted his take on the Weirdest Guitars In The World, and after taking a look, all I can say is that guitarists are a pretty conservative bunch.

You haven’t seen weird, until you’ve seen some of the bizarre synth contraptions that keyboardists and electronic musicians have come up with.

In fact, some of these instruments are so weird, we’re not even sure if they are synthesizers!

Take a look at this twisted synthfest, and you be the judge.

The Thingamakit

The Thingamakit isn’t like other synthesizers - it’s an anthropomorphic robot synth that you make yourself.

It can make all sorts of weird noises - but the best part is that every Thingamakit synth is different!

The Sexy Touch-Based Music Synthesizer

Rory Harnden’s Body Music is a visual demonstration of a touch-based music synthesizer.

While you may be thinking of new and interesting ways of making this baby squeal, we like it because it demonstrates how synth sounds can be modulated based on skin contact.

Moaning LisaMoaning Lisa

Matt Ganucheau’s Moaning Lisa, right, is quite possibly the strangest electronic music instrument ever created.

Part shock art, part artificial intelligence and part musical instrument, Moaning Lisa challenges you on many levels.

Ganucheau explains:

“The process leading to a female orgasm is a uniquely delicate challenge for both sexes leaving it a mystery to most men and women.”

“Moaning Lisa is an instillation that examines this complex process by simplifying it into an almost game-like state. With Lisa, as in life, there are no instructions on display. This leaves each participant to discover how Lisa’s true sexual potential is unlocked.”

More info, with video, here.

The Steampunk Synthesizer

This steampunk synthesizer is inspired by Jules Verne and features etched brass control panels, so you can hyper-modulate the oscillators and travel back in time in style.

The TM-7 Ultra-Distortion Scrotum Smasher

Metasonix Scrotum Smasher

Eric Barbour is hell-bent on putting tubes where they don’t belong, and the TM-7 Ultra-Distortion Scrotum Smasher is no exception.

The TM-7 is one of Barbour’s strange lineup of synth module/guitar pedals designed to explore new ways of using vacuum tubes for audio.

Checking the controls, you’ll find:

  • Smash
  • Scrotum
  • Double Scrotum
  • Mega Scrotum and…..
  • Scrotum Up Ya Ass

If you think that the TM-7 might be a nice effect to feed your new age pad patches through, Barber notes “There is no bypass. Only Zu’ul.”

Circuit Bent Farrah Fawcett

There’s no comparison to making music with the head of Farrah Fawcett, one of 13 bizarre circuit-bent children’s toys. Read more…

Kaossilator

David Battino has documented a boot-up hack that lets you create 4-bar loops with the Korg Kaossilator:

  • While holding the Tap and Loop Rec buttons, slide the power switch from Standby to On. The display willl show DLY (delay) to confirm you’re in bufferless mode.
  • Release the buttons.
  • Hold down Loop Rec and Tap again; this puts the Kaossilator into loop-length adjustment mode.
  • Turn the data knob one click to the right. The display will change from L 8 to L16. You’re now in 4-bar (16 beat) loop mode.
  • Double-click the Scale button to return to sound-select mode, or just wait 12 seconds.

Follow the link above for Battino’s demo MP3s.

This is an interesting hack, but a hack just the same. If you’re a Kaossilator owner, give this a try and let me know what you think of it.

This new video, by Cut Chemist, is the first music video shot with a 360 degree panoramic lens.

The technological first is cool -but what makes it really cool is the post-Beatles seventies psychedelic visuals.

Radiohead has written new music for the soundtrack to the new movie adaptation of Fight Club and Snuff author Chuck Palahniuk’s book Choke.

Speaking to BBC 6 Music on the Shaun Keaveny Breakfast Show, Palahniuk explained it all came from his love of the band’s music, saying:

“Clark Gregg, who directed the movie version of Choke which comes out on September 26 (in the US), he knew that I’d written Choke while listening to Radiohead’s Pablo Honey, with Creep, over and over and over,” said Palahniuk.”

“So Clark got Radiohead to contribute a song; to write a song for the very end of the movie, the final credits. Apparently Radiohead liked the movie so much, they’ve written the score, most of the ambient music throughout it,” adds Palahniuk.  “So it’s ‘Choke – with the music of Radiohead’.

Sounds like it should be a treat for Radiohead fans.

Update: false alarm

Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing vs Title Music from A Clockwork Orange by Wendy Carlos…as imagined by Phil RetroSpector.

Almost works for me - but it’d be better without the Marvin Gaye!

iZotope today announced that iDrum, its beat creation application for the Apple iPhone and iPod touch, is now available on the Apple App Store.

The iDrum application takes advantage of unique features of the iPhone platform — users can tap virtual pads to create rhythms, shake the handset to clear patterns, and use slide and flick gestures to navigate the application’s interface. Immersive, colorful visuals show the relationship between different sounds in the beat, allowing users to create new rhythms by creating visual patterns.

Using a special companion application, beats can be turned into ringtones for iPhone.

The first two versions of iDrum, Hip Hop Edition and Club Edition, are now available for US$4.99 each from Apple’s App Store. iZotope plans to release different genre-based editions of iDrum in the coming months.

Percussa has announced a lot of AudioCubes news in the last few days:

  • They announced a new AudioCubes Shop. The new shop offers software such as Propellerheads Reason and Ableton Live, and sound packs, besides the 2 and 4 AudioCube sets. It should also make it easier to order from anywhere in the world, track order progress, ask questions and provide feedback on products.
  • They introduced Urbano Lounge, a new downloadable soundpack for Reason, premapped for AudioCubes. Urbano Lounge pack contains a collection of mid tempo lounging loops, breaks and samples. The pack contains over 140Mb of loop content recorded and produced exclusively for Percussa Audio Cubes by Cuesounds (UK). Although the pack was designed to work with Propellerheads Reason 4, the samples can be used with other software, too.
  • They have published AudioCubes manuals in Italian, Spanish, Japanese and German.
