Arturia has announced that it’s now shipping Origin, a hardware DSP system that recreates and expands on several vintage synthesizers.
“We are extremely proud to be shipping Origin”, says Frederic Brun, President of Arturia. “The project has taken much longer than we initially thought and, since we had announced the product early, Origin has been eagerly awaited by the market.”
“During the last 4 years, Arturia has been dedicated to bringing a synthesizer that would be both innovative and powerful. At the same time, the company wanted to offer a simple, enjoyable and straightforward experience to the musician. We truly believe that we have achieved that and look forward to people seeing Origin in action.”

The Conference Committee of the British Section of the Audio Engineering Society has announced details of its 22nd Conference to be held at New Hall College, Cambridge, April 11-12, 2007. Illusions in Sound – The Applications of Psychoacoustics To Audio, the two-day event will cover the techniques, technologies and controversies involved in creating convincing sonic illusions through the use of psychoacoustics – our knowledge of how the ear/brain combination works to enable us to hear and localise sounds around us.
Topics to be explored by the 18 papers will include:
- The role of psychoacoustics in consumer and sound reinforcement audio system and loudspeaker design
- An overview of the latest developments in spatial recording and reproduction
- Dramatic new techniques for realizing full with-height surround
- A comparison of radical approaches to creating surround recordings
- An overview of audio in the electronic games industry
A special panel will consider, “What do we really want from surround-sound?” Presenters will explore capturing the ’sound’ of real acoustic spaces for use in surround reverberation systems, and discuss applications of surround-sound in radio drama. In addition to the papers, two demonstration rooms will offer current ‘with-height’ and ‘planar’ spatial reproduction systems. The Conference is a must for audio professionals and academics involved in surround and spatial audio for: broadcasting, feature films, music recording, gaming, sound reinforcement or consumer electronics.
Optional overnight accommodation for the conference has been organised to enhance networking potential and provide a full appreciation of the ambience of The New Hall College For Women in Cambridge. Set on 11 acres of grounds with informal lawns and gardens the campus is considered a modern architectural masterpiece. Proceedings, lunch and Wedneday evening’s dinner are included in the registration fee.

AES Update: Novation has introduced the ReMOTE 25 SL USB MIDI controller keyboard. It features featuring conventiently-placed pots, encoders, sliders and buttons, along with two brightly backlit LCDs to display 16 different parameter names and values at any one time.
The keyboard controller has several interesting new features. The first improvement shines a new light on the world of MIDI control, as well as giving the SL its name. Two large brightly-backlit 144-character LCD screens reside at the top of the front panel, which can display 16 parameter names and values simultaneously.
This means that Template overlays or having to rely on the user’s memory are a thing of the past and music creation and performance is as simple and pleasurable as possible. Furthermore, Menu navigation is significantly quicker as each Menu page is now displayed side by side along the large screens for immediate access and modification. Of course, a stylish Template Editor software package is also available free of charge.
39 of the 40 onboard Template Memories are factory preset (and also user programmable) so that the SL will work with all popular software applications, virtual instruments and external MIDI equipment straight out of the box. However, the remaining onboard Template is used for a new and special purpose, which is actually an infinitely expanding amount of Templates rolled into one. This cutting edge feature, we call Automap, is set to change the way music is made forever. When an Automap-supported application (currently Reason 3 and Cubase SX3, more to follow very soon) is booted up, the SL automatically loads this intelligent Template and maps all active components within the session to itself. Then, all the user needs to do is click once with the mouse or press one button to switch between controlling different instruments or sections of the session. Throughout the process, all information is displayed clearly on the screens to make everything crystal clear.
As well as boasting the X/Y Touchpad, joystick, a total of 56 assignable pots, encoders, sliders and buttons and the “best-feeling keys on the market”, the SL also offers highly responsive trigger pads. These allow the user to create even more dynamic performance effects, playing drums or chord stabs through a software sampler for example.
Novation says that full product details and pricing will soon be available.
