John Kannenberg describes his Flumen as an “Ambient video recontextualizing sonic and visual source material involving water and motion.”

This is part of a visualization for planned performances of The Patience Of A Saint I, by Carl Sagan’s Ghost.

The ambient gurus at disquiet snagged a copy of Tristan Perich’s 1-Bit Symphony, a unique piece of audio art:

1-Bit Symphony isn’t a CD; it’s a small homebrew electronic device nestled inside a CD case. It is, in that way, a kind of parallel to the Buddha Machine (and the forthcoming Gristleism). The 1-Bit Symphony is to the compact disc what the Buddha and Gristleism boxes are to transistor radios. They’re lo-fi music-producing technology packed inside the familiar form of a pretty much outdated music-producing technology.

When the switch seen second from the left inside the box is flipped to its right, the machine starts emitting lo-fi sound (it’s necessary to attach headphones to the audio jack to hear the music). There are five “tracks” in all, “movements” they’re titled here. The first four are between five and 10 minutes in length. The fifth will play forever, or at least until that replaceable battery dies. In brief, the music is a series of cascading little beeps that suggest Philip Glass as a character in a Mario Bros. video game.

Earlier in the year, Moldover released his CD in a theremin CD case.

Here’s a bit of ambient goodness to start of Free Music Friday – Herzog’s First Summer And The Running Dream:

first summer and the running dream” contains 5 tracks with a complete duration of 30 minutes. Compared to his earlier works “first summer…“ has a more droning, a bit distorted character. The sounds are layered very softly and sublime to a very harmonic composition. The overall mood is quite laid-back with noisy, distorted splinters. The noisy elements are getting stronger to the end of the EP but it leaves still a very harmonic picture.

Sunday Synth Jam: Skoulaman created this live Berlin School/space music/ambient synthesizer jam.

Sequenced with an arpeggiator loop from the Kurzweil Midiboard connected with the Kawai k1r and the Waldorf micro Q. The solo vibe sounds are from a Yamaha CX5M computer and the Korg Lamda in combination with a Moogerfooger. Accords played om the Juno 106 and on the Korg Lamda.

Some of the details may change, but the general design is set. An alternate design may be offered which features an extended faceplate with blank space for adding extra control hardware.

The Drone Lab is a 4 voice analog drone synth, rhythm generator and FX processor. It is capable of generating rich, textured soundscapes, hypnotic drones and complex rhythmic sequences.

A live take. Trance induced polyrhythmic ambient piece. It reminded me of something old – hence the name. The Watchers from the Sky. The Annunaki are the ones of Heaven and Earth in the Sumerian lore.

The synthesizer is an Arrick modular.

The delays are a Lexicon MX200 and a T.C.Elecronic D-TWO.

Six oscillators are used. Two are tone generators and four are modifiers. I also used a noise source for the random sample & hold to an instrument interface which generated odd accent timings for the noise source through a Cyndustries Quad Low Pass Gate.

The moving line is the sequencer run through a Suit & Tie Guy Soundlabs Sea Devils diode ladder Filter module.

The monotone drone is through an Arrick Q150 Transistor Ladder Low Pass Filter. The drone timing was designed by using two low frequency oscillators’ pulse waveforms into a Ring modulator (balanced modulator). The syncopated output was sent to an envelope generator that fired the amplifier and filter.

The resonant octave-sweeping sound is a manually modified FM oscillator tone fed through an Arrick Q107 State Variable Filter in band-pass mode.

No attempt was made to synchronize the various oscillators and sequencers. This gave me a polyrhythmic feel that seemed organic.

A Pan/Fade module sweeps the sounds in stereo for a dimensional effect.

Throbbing Gristle’s Chris Carter posed this short demo of a black Gristleism.

The Gristleism is described as a “Throbbing Gristle palm-sized loop playback machine.”

Naughty Panther describes Plinkton as an application that lets you “create a rhythmic groove over a bed of smooth ambiance.”

Plinkton is less Kenny G, though, and more ambient Pong.

The app lets you select from three background tracks and 4 “plinkton sounds”. The “plinkton” moves around the screen, triggering sounds as it bounces off the edges of the screen.

Plinkton can also act as an OSC sender, letting you use it to trigger other apps.

Plinkton sells for $.99.

This year’s KVR Challenge resulted in a lot of interesting new free music software – including this Windows ambient sound synthesizer, Antorpya.

Green is constantly experimenting with sound, and documenting his work on YouTube, SoundCloud and at his blog.

Green explains:

I focus mainly on work dealing with field recording, sound art, generative synthesis, abandoned spaces/natural ambience, environmental/nature sounds, industrial spaces, machines, drones and more.

seeyouinsleep is a platform in which my work is let out, this site/platform is built of various mediums, primarily sound but also video, photography and art.

From a early age i have experimented with sound and have always had a fascination with the sound a natural space can produce and create and what you can do with that sound.

Cycles is a collection of 10 very short pieces – the longest is 50 seconds. All the audio on the album was created using a generative process.

Green suggests putting the album into iTunes or your portable music player and listening it on shuffled repeat, to “let it make a piece of music by itself.”

Brian Eno has had a career as producer, musician, sonic innovator and experimental artist that spans four decades.

He’s produced, arguably, the most important recordings by U2, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Robert Fripp, Devo and others. He also pioneered the genre of “ambient music.” More recently, Eno’s helped create “sonic-art” app Bloom and the video game Spore.

Eno sat down with Minnesota Public Radio’s Steve Seel to discuss the recording studio as canvas, the idea of discovery and risk in music making, as well as his recent reunion with longtime collaborator David Byrne. The interview includes a discussion of Eno’s forays into “generative music,” his concept of composer as gardener, and his ongoing interest in the idea of surrender in music.
