Ardour 2.4, the latest version of the free digital audio workstation for Linux & OS X, is finally released.
Features
- on OS X, direct support for import of all file types supported by CoreAudio, including MP3 and AAC. Linux users can take comfort: there is ongoing work to offer similar capabilities on their platform.
- per-track faders in editor window
- Freesound integration (direct searching and download of samples from Freesound) via the Import dialog.
- Vertical auto-scrolling (if you drag a region off the top or bottom of the editor, the editor “canvas” will scroll just as it does now with left/right scrolling)
- AU GUIs basically working (issues remain with SmartElectronix plugins but we’re working them to fix the situation)
- AU automation working
- New option to create xrun markers on the location markerbar
- Tape Machine monitoring mode ( description)
- Rubberbanding Snaps to Grid (self explanitory I hope, defaults to off)
- Per-track gain faders in the editor window (when the track height is large enough)
- dynamic discovery & loading of keybindings
- Locked Edit mode disallows sliding regions in time. Override by holding 3rd mouse button
- Font size scaler in Windows -> Preferences -> Misc
- MIDI auto-rebinding patch (the first N controllers always control the first N tracks in the mixer, no matter which tracks they are)
AlphaTrack Gains Tracktion
Software manufacturers continue adding support for the AlphaTrack DAW controller from Frontier Design Group. Now you can use AlphaTrack with Mackie’s Tracktion 3 and with Cakewalk’s Guitar Tracks Pro 3.
With AlphaTrack’s touch-sensitive jog/shuttle strip, LCD display, three touch-sensitive encoder knobs, standard transport buttons, user-definable buttons, and 100mm touch-sensitive fader, you have everything you need right at your fingertips to control Tracktion 3 and Guitar Tracks Pro 3. AlphaTrack also works well with MOTU’s Digital Performer, Adobe’s Audition 2, Apple’s Final Cut Pro and Soundtrack Pro, Steinberg’s Nuendo and Cubase (SX/SL, Cubase 4, Studio 4), Cakewalk’s SONAR, Propellerhead’s Reason, and Digidesign’s ProTools.
Several AlphaTrack accessories are available now too. Frontier Design Group’s online store has padded gig bags, custom-made for AlphaTrack.
In response to customer requests, Frontier Design Group has also developed an alternate knob set for AlphaTrack. The set includes a fader cap and three knobs for the encoders. The new fader cap has a deeper curve than the original fader cap. The new knobs are more cylindrical than the original knobs, with protruding ridges which are easy to grasp. The new coating is slightly more textured while maintaining the touch-sensitivity of the knobs and fader.
Frontier Design Group is also pleased to announce that Ardour 2 now supports its TranzPort wireless remote controller in Linux systems. Simply connect TranzPort’s USB interface to an active USB port, launch Ardour 2 and select ‘TranzPort’ from the Options / Control Surfaces menu.

The School of Audio Engineering (SAE) has announced that it will become a corporate sponsor of Ardour, an open source digital audio workstation project. The sponsorship ensures continual development of Ardour as a free, community-based audio recording and production software.
Ardour has previously received corporate support from Solid State Logic and Harrison, but has primarily relied on donations from the public and the dedication of creator Paul Davis.
This new initiative will support the further development of Ardour to become a viable DAW alternative for home and professional studio users, freely available to anyone. Development aims include a more integrated experience on Mac OS X. A separate version is intended to be developed which will be tailored towards beginner students, whilst also being available to anyone and staying compatible with the main branch of Ardour. Solid State Logic has announced its involvement with the Ardour workstation and is contributing to its development by employing Paul Davis, the founder of Ardour and its key developer.
Paul is working on an agreed set of development objectives and is also co-ordinating the efforts of other Ardour developers. Our aim is to develop associated software & hardware and, in time, produce Ardour based products with special SSL elements that add value.
Solid State Logic Managing Director Antony David says: “Our involvement with Ardour should not be seen as exclusive of other workstation manufacturers but we regard the Ardour platform as important for an industry that doesn’t currently have a truly open project interchange standard or an open platform for plug-in developers. We regard the open architecture and platform neutral technology of the Ardour workstation as a natural fit with SSL’s long-term vision to provide scalable and customisable solutions to a rapidly growing customer base.”
Ardour Founder Paul Davis explains: “Other pro audio manufacturers such as Harrison have already contributed to the development of Ardour and more are interested to do so. We hope that our involvement will encourage others to get on board. We have also made it clear to those who have asked that we would not object to a move to establish a separate legal entity (sometimes referred to as the ‘Ardour Foundation’) if that helps convince potential contributors about the security of the code as open source software.”
The Ardour Audio Workstation is a collaborative open-source software development effort. Rather than being a product of a particular company, its development is centered around a growing community of independent software developers.
