It’s a great example of what’s currently possible with browser based music software.

Remember ToneMatrix – Andre Michelle’s addictive-like-crack Flash audio sequencer?

It’s been added to AudioTool, the browser-based virtual studio:

We have release a small update of the AudioTool and included André’s ToneMatrix. Some features that have been implemented in the last weeks are online as well. Removing an effect for instance will not destroy the cables. The desktop scales now without interrupting the audio output and various other performance tweaks have been made.

Here’s an example of what this glossy bit of Flash yumminess can do:

If that’s not geektacular enough, the Lemur is mapped to the Rasselbock and the Kobolt.

HobNox has updated their Audiotool browser-based virtual studio so that you can now record electronic music right in your browser.

The Hobnox Audiotool update provides some new features like more robust audio signal processing, dynamically adding plugins and live recording.

Here is a detailed list of the new features:

Flashplayer 10 support

Adobe now provides a ew Sound API to stream audio to the sound card. Now, entirely processed in Flash, the audio latency is more satisfying and the output more stable. You simply get a better experience.

Live Recording

The tool will also now allow to record a live audio session to your harddrive: WYHIWYG (What you hear is what you get):

We transcoded a Vorbis Encoder (better quality than MP3) to Actionscript to shrink the filesize of the recorded audio in order for you to upload it into your user profile library. We can’t wait to hear what you guys will be producing and are really excited about this development. 

Plugin Shelf

At the bottom of the screen shot above, you will see a ‘Dock’-like shelf. With this you’ll have full control of the plugins you want to use. You’ll be able to drag & drop plugins into and from the shelf. You’ll only see the devices you want to use and not the full inital setup like before. 

New stomp-boxes

Hobnox has added some new effect devices, like Compressor, Gate, Phaser and a Slope (Filter unit) as well as a Merger and a Splitter.

Developer Andre Michelle has announced the first recording made with the HobNox AudioTool, the browser-based virtual studio:

I admit: My session is actually boring. I quickly setup some beats and just one 303 without any effects to test the Streaming and Encoding. Download the OGG-file here. The next update is scheduled for September, 1th. This may shift as we need to wait for FlashPlayer 10. The current version of the AudioTool works with a Java applet to stream the AS3 generated audio to the sound card. We are looking forward to get rid of it.

It’s amazing to see Michelle and others pushing the limits of what can be done with Flash.

Digimix is an interesting new application that promises to put audio mixing into your Web browser.

While Hobnox’s AudioTool is like Reason for your Web browser, Digimix is a browser-based audio mixing program. It lets you mix high-quality audio and offers many of the features of a programlike Garageband: an easy-to-use interface, effects and automation.

This is something you have to try out.

While audio editing in your browser is fairly kludgie still, the developers know that and are building for the future:

This is an early test of some of the things we are working on. Not all features are in, there are lots of bugs and things will break!

We have a long way to go, but wanted to share this in hopes of getting early feedback.

For now we’ve included a small library of loops from remix.nin.com to test with. Eventually you will be able to import your own sounds and much more.

The goal of the this alpha is to test out the end to end workflow. Creating a project, saving, opening, bounce down, and download mix.

It’s an amazing technology demonstration, but it’s also clear that this isn’t going to replace desktop audio applications anytime soon.

What will be interesting, though, is to see the creative ways this technology gets put to use.

For example, what’s to keep a band like Nine Inch Nails from putting their next track out in a Digimix multitrack, prepped for remixing?

Could your band or solo career use a chunky financial investment? Upload your audio files and music videos and mobilize your fan base to vote for you. Now’s the chance to give your development a huge financial boost.

The Contest is a search to find undiscovered talent in the music, film and culture fields who wish to submit audio/visual submissions featuring the Participant’s creative expression in one of the three Categories: Music, Film and Culture

MUSIC:
All creatives including bands, solo musicians, songwriters or producers, who are eligible under the Rules of this Contest are invited to participate. Participants are required to only utilize their own original materials (sound recordings & compositions) in the submission of their Projects and shall not utilize any materials that are not original to them (e.g. remixes, mash-ups, interpretations and cover-versions are strictly forbidden without the express written consent of the rights owner). Failure to abide by this requirement shall be cause for immediate disqualification and shall result in the immediate removal of the Project from the Hobnox Evolution 2 Contest.

FILM:
All eligible film and cinematic creatives including directors, animation designers, comedians, storytellers or actors are invited to participate. Participants’ Projects must have originally shot, fully cleared, non-infringing content in English or German (or subtitled in either language). The use or utilization of any third party material, including but not limited to the use of other’s copyrights, trademarks or likeness, is strictly forbidden without the express written consent of the rights owner. Failure to abide by this requirement shall be cause for immediate disqualification and shall result in the immediate removal of the Project from the Hobnox Evolution 2 Contest.

CULTURE:
All eligible artists and creatives whose Projects fit into the genre of Culture are invited to participate and submit. Participant’s Projects must have original content in German or English (or subtitles in either language). Again, Participants are required to only utilize their own original materials in the submission of their Projects and shall not utilize any materials that are not original to them. Failure to abide by this requirement shall be cause for immediate disqualification and shall result in the immediate removal of the Project from the Hobnox Evolution 2 Contest.

Dynamic Sound Generation — Dynamic sound generation extends the Sound class to play back dynamically created audio content through the use of an event listener on the Sound object.

This will support dynamic audio streaming. Details are available at Tinic Uro’s blog:

In Flash Player 10, code named Astro, the Sound object will have one more method which is designed to work together with the “samplesCallback” event handler. It will extract raw sound data from an existing sound asset.

That means any mp3 file you have in the library or load externally can be accessed and processed.

With what we provide in Flash Player 10, we hope that we are addressing the most pressing needs of what you want to do with sound. It will likely be just a matter of time until we’ll see high level frameworks done by the community on the magnitude of something like Papervision3D. The next couple of years should be very interesting indeed when it comes to sound on the web.

What’s missing? Unfortunately some features did not make it into Flash Player 10: Extracting audio data from a microphone and extracting audio from a NetStream object. We are aware that both features are highly desirable, but for various reasons it was not possible to make this happen in this release.

This is good news for developers and good news for musicians. I’m already impressed by what is possible with Flash (see AudioTool).

David at Hobnox sends word that they’ve updated their browser-based virtual studio, AudioTool:

Just a quick note that we just rolled out an update of the Hobnox Audiotool. As promised the TR808 is now online, along with two new stompboxes (Compressor and Bitcrusher) and some enhanced functions. Saving is still not possible yet, we’re working hard to make it happen for the next update.

It’s great to see AudioTool develop. Saving and offline use are probably critical, though, to AudioTools gaining acceptance.

AudioTool is like Reason for your Web browser.

It’s basically a group of Flash audio hackers that are working to get Adobe to make Flash a more powerful platform for audio manipulation:

We think that Flash is and still will be the most popular browser plugin worldwide. Software as we know it today will move bit by bit inside the browser. A lot of companies are currently developing online applications to work with text, images and video. We and a lot of people would also like to provide beautiful online sound and music applications. Thats why we launched this campaign. We want Adobe marketings to be aware of this issue and hopefully decide to add reasonable sound features very soon.

Seems like a worthwhile cause. Most people don’t think of browser-based tools as platforms for creating music, but things like AudioTool are changing that.

This gets my vote for the coolest thing you’ll see this weekend.

It’s a live performance using the Hobnox AudioTool – the new browser-based virtual studio – using a MIDI controller and Percussa AudioCubes.
