Pulse Code has released DB-303 Digital Bass Line synthesizer – a Roland TB-303 emulator, with effects, for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

It’s $4.99 via the App Store.

Amidio has announced that it plans to release a new virtual TB303 for the iPhone – 303 Pocket Noise (name could change in future).

303 Pocket Noise will be priced at $0.99 or at $1.99.

Planned date of release: middle or late December 2008.

Here’s the scoop:

Pocket Noise 4-pattern 303 Emulator

  • Based on Noise.io’s Pro Engine
  • 2 waveforms – saw, square
  • 4 Patterns with realtime pattern sequence programming
  • Realtime pattern editing (on loop)
  • Auto-save on quit
  • Slides, 3 octaves
  • Very simple interface: just 2 screens.
  • Modulation surface like in Noise.io Pro
  • swingy BPM
  • effects: delay, distortion
  • .wav export via built-in server (no additional programs needed)
  • direct beatmaker export (hopefully).

According to the company, “We need this app to be a testing playground for new features and if the features prove itself, they will be expanded quickly into Noise.io Pro. Noise.io Pro will always remain the flagship product and will contain all the features found in smaller products.”

This is sure to be controversial, but I can’t argue with their thoroughness.

Acid Voice has compared a collection of the top clones of the Roland TB-303 and ranked them, based on how well they clone the sound of the original acid synth.

They’ve got audio demos and in depth comparisons of the various bassline synths, including the x0xb0x, the Future Retro Revolution, the TeeBee and the FR 777.

Here’s how they stack up, in Acid Voice’s opinion:

  1. Adafruit x0xb0x
  2. Future Retro Revolution
  3. Syntecno TeeBee MKIII
  4. Oakley TM3030
  5. Analogue Solutions TB-X
  6. Acidcode ML303
  7. Acidlab Bassline
  8. MAM MB33 MKII
  9. Future Retro 777

I would rank the 777 much higher. The Future Retro 777 will do just about everything you’d want to do with a TB303, plus it’s a fairly full-featured analog synthesizer, too.

The bottom line, though, is that there’s never been a better time for people interested in great-sounding acid bassline synths.

Let me know what you think of the results!

bigcitymusic demos the Analogue Solutions Trans Bass Xpress TB-303 Clone, a faithful clone of the synth engine of the Roland TB-303.

The Trans Bass Xpress does not have a sequencer built in, so you have to use a MIDI sequencer with it. But this offers possibilities for more interesting patterns and greater performance capabilities.

repeatle created this bassline showdown – a comparison between the x0xb0x, TB-303 and ABL 2.10.

And guess what? They’re all good…..

      something to think about

When Mozart was composing at the end of the eighteenth century, the city of Vienna was so quiet that fire alarms could be given verbally, by a shouting watchman mounted on top of St. Stefan’s Cathedral. In twentieth-century society, the noise level is such that it keeps knocking our bodies out of tune and out of their natural rhythms. This ever-increasing assault of sound upon our ears, minds, and bodies adds to the stress load of civilized beings trying to live in a highly complex environment. — Stephen Halpern
