This live jam features the Radikal Spectralis II taking it’s clock signal from a Red Voyager Beat extractor that is “listening” to the mix coming from a laptop/Ableton Live set-up.

Details below.

via kipptumor:

This is the Spectralis II (brand new model) taking it’s clock signal from Red Voyager Beat extractor that is literally listening to the mix coming from the laptop/Ableton set-up. Once you understand what exactly is going on in this video the top of your skull will pop off and your mind will do a 360 in mid-air, returning to its original position, but altered in a permanent state of “you’re kidding”. This is the bare-boned digital system (without the Kaoss pad, Kaossilator, or Percussa audio cubes, and, obviously, without the video gear), using only the Logitech joystick to cherry-pick through the on-screen clips & activate the effects for each channel, the Novation X Station to fade the 8 channels on screen up and down and its joystick to control Ableton’s effects’ parameters, and, of course, the amazing Spectralis II from Radikal technologies. The silkscreening is still a little tacky it’s so new (just kidding-it is beautiful). This is just me finally getting the hang of this thing (sort of) at 1:30 in the morning. The music is a mixture of the Spectralis’ other-worldly sounds, our own MIDI mixes (original compositions), other artists’ music, and a lot of beats, grooves, and loops at all times. I even demonstrate the ability to “jam” along on the X Station’s built-in 300-voice digital synthesizer. Enjoy!

Luca De Rosso’s OTTO is an electronic musical instrument for realtime manual beat slicing of audio samples.

OTTO provides a tangible user interface designed with the aim of giving the user the feel of having the sample in his hands. The musician can manipulate an audio sample in real time through the use of a restricted number of simple physical buttons and switches.

In computer music audio samples are generally represented as the waveform itself or as little colored blocks. Since the sample inside OTTO as to be controlled really fast, the performer needs to quickly understand where and how to play a specific part. The sample visualization has been designed to provide just the information needed and nothing more.

There are several more demo videos at Luca De Rosso’s YouTube channel.

via Peter Kirn’s Create Digital Music – Peter puts up something incredible every day, so make sure CDM is on your shortlist of sites to visit!

Dave Smith Instruments Poly Evolver

The Poly Evolver Keyboard is the king of the Evolver line of performance synthesizers.

It is a four-voice synthesizer with a 5-octave keyboard, pitch and mod wheels, and a ton of knobs and switches in a clean, clear layout.

According to Keyboard Magazine’s review of the Polyphonic Evolvoer:

“Skeptics who insist that it’s too expensive just need to get an earful. It’s like a mint Prophet-5 plus a PPG Wave in a single reliable box that easily tucks under your arm and lights up like a night out on Coruscant.

The PEK is a player’s axe whose layout programmers will flip for. Whichever you are, this is nothing less than a future classic and a major event in synth design.”

Features

Each voice is a complete Evolver with four oscillators per voice, two analog and two digital.

True stereo signal path with separate Curtis analog low-pass filters in each channel for each voice. Each voice has its own independent effects (feedback, delay, distortion, high-pass filter, etc.).

Highly accessible sound control for easy, intuitive operation: 78 knobs and 59 switches.

Clocked, pulsing blue LEDs and hardwood end-panels.

Each voice has an independent 16 x 4 step sequencer. Everything (sequencer, LFOs, and delay) syncs perfectly to MIDI.

In Program mode, all four voices play the same sound. In Combo mode, voices can be allocated however desired: stack all 4 for a huge unison sound, split or layer the keyboard in any configuration, and/or play one or all sequences at the same time. Each voice can respond to a different MIDI channel.

Multiple Poly Evolvers can be daisy-chained for increased polyphony. “Poly Chain” mode (with dedicated MIDI output) handles voice assignment overflow for effortless expansion.

Each voice has its own stereo output in addition to the mix and headphones outputs.

Stereo audio input that can be routed to any or all of the voices, enabling parallel audio processing of external stereo or mono signals. The output of one voice can be routed to the input of another for interesting double-processing effects.
