Developer Erik Sigth has introduced Nils, a real-time bitcrusher, sampler and looper for iOS.
Here’s what he has to say about Nils:
Nils is a real time sound effect machine with a minimalistic looper. It comes with bitcrush, delay and gain for distortion. As input you can use the internal microphone, your earpods or accessories like iRig. Can also be used as a sampler, by holding the delay buffer and changing its phase. Lo-fi looping for both beginners and professionals.
This video, via cl516, demonstrates the bitcrushing capabilities of the OTO Biscuit. Continue reading
Shuriken, creator of “sonic weapons for the music-ninja”, has introduced BitTest, a free audio effect for Macs:
BitTest is a sweet little bitcrusher VST, it converts your data to 8 bits, then you can turn the bit’s off (the top row) or invert them (the bottom row) individually. That is you can individually flip and invert the bits.
And that is all this little baby does, but she does it well.

This is a demo of the Oto Biscuit Stereo Effects Processor.
Biscuit is a stereo sound effect processor. Thanks to a subtle blend of 8-bit digital and analog processing, Biscuit is able to create a wide range of sounds. It goes from 8-bit character and lo-fi digital artefacts to numeric distortions.
Biscuit is basically an enhanced bit depth and sample-rate reducer, known as “bitcrusher”, followed by an analog filter and a simple mixing section (dry/wet). It also offers other features like removing or inverting each of the 8 bits, changing the sample rate from 250Hz to 30kHz, or adding one of the four effects (waveshaper, delay, pitch shifter and step filter). Experimentations In Plugins
Presented are 3 plugins, a Downsampler/Bitcrusher (Downplay), an LFO based, modulation plugin (Modlove) and a granular delay buffer playback effect (DelayGrains). All plugins were created with Max/MSP 4.6.3 and the Pluggo API. The interfaces are custom designed and coded as well, using Max’s JSUI Objects and the OpenGL language.
Also the song “Net Neutrality” is an example showcasing the plugins abilities on live tracks. A video describing the plugins and delivering the song is included.
