Grape Solutions’ Pluto is an online synthesizer and digital audio workstation. It’s implemented in a web browser, and based on Microsoft Silverlight.

It offers:

• 16 tracks with 32 voice polyphony plus 6 fx/track
• Granular synthesizer, Karplus-Strong guitar synthesizer or drum-machine per each track
• Highly optimized, multithreaded audio pipeline
• MIDI import/export, WAV export

Pluto is not a commercial app, but is intended to be more of a demonstration of what can be done with Silverlight in a Web browser.

Pluto is processor intensive – it comes with some demo tracks (including Jarre’s Equinox 5), and they pushed the limits of my dual-processor 1.66Ghz machine.

Instead, it’s the latest example of browser based music software. In this case, Soundation is a virtual studio that runs your web browser.

Online creative tools site Aviary has introduced Myna – a free Web site that’s like Garageband 1.0 for your Web browser.

Myna lets you record music to your computer and save it to the site, and gives you the basic tools to make loop-based music.

Myna’s too slow and cumbersome to be of much interest to most musicians. However, just as cheap video cameras and Youtube have revolutionized the world of video, cheap computer mics and browser based music software like Myna are likely to soon radically change music.

Free Music Software: inudge is a severely addictive browser-based matrix synthesizer that you can steal from here or the inudge site and embed in your web site, blog or social media profile:

It’s a great example of what’s currently possible with browser based music software.

Remember ToneMatrix – Andre Michelle’s addictive-like-crack Flash audio sequencer?

It’s been added to AudioTool, the browser-based virtual studio:

We have release a small update of the AudioTool and included André’s ToneMatrix. Some features that have been implemented in the last weeks are online as well. Removing an effect for instance will not destroy the cables. The desktop scales now without interrupting the audio output and various other performance tweaks have been made.

The P22 Music Text Composition Generator is a free online application that turns text into music.

Paste in text, select a tempo and select an instrument and the Music Text Composition Generator will turn your text into music that you can play online or download as a MIDI file.

Description:

A short text may be best at a slow pace (IE 10 BPM) whereas a longer text may prove more engaging at 1200 BP. Texts where phrases are repeated often (like P22 Music Text Composition Generator) provide recurring musical phrasing that is truly astounding. Length of visual score is limited and longer text may not render onscreen or print to full capacity.

In some browsers (Safari 2 or greater), the ability to play real time multi-tracking can allow for complex compositions. Simply follow steps 1-4 repeatedly altering instrument and BPM rate. For browsers that do not allow simultaneous midi files to be played, multiple browser windows can be opened and “performed” at the same time.

The SoundCloud people are moving quickly and developing some interesting stuff. 

The Cloud Player is a browser-based music player. It lets you:

• Find and play all tracks from SoundCloud
• Save playlists to your Google Account
• Make smart playlists based on genre, BPM, etc
• Share your ready-made playlists with your friends
• Collaborate in making the best playlists ever

It’s a 1.0 app and a bit limited – but it’s an open source and could very well be the start of something much bigger.
